MISCELLANY
Old llcmorlt'i.
BY M. L. SI.
"I have looked with a lingering love on
thc fair atar of childhood."-TUPPER.
Why ia ruy ?spirit sad to-day?
Oh! why these gushing tears?
Mv thoughts arc wandering quite away
To scenes of other years;
And memory, like a captive bird-,
Is fluttering in my breast;
Her voice its inmost depths have stirred,
And woke each silent guest.
And one by one past visions throng
Like bidden spectres start
While dear old memories, hushed too long,
Are whispering in my heart;
And time and distance--years forgot,
I stand once more a child
A happy child, upon thc spot
Where life first o*er me smiled;
And every sceno that childhood loved
Is smiling o'er my view,
And every spot where childhood roved
Is bright before mo, too.
Like ola familiar friends, the trees
Thc velvet sod beneath
Thc deep green shade of clustering leaves,
Fanned by the summer's breath;
And "mid the trees, their green arms spread,
Thc old house scorns to sleep,
Calm as the mermaids' coral bed
"Neath the still waves of the deep.
Sweet spot! few years as yet have flown
In sadness o'er my path.
Since there, witli many a loving one,
I gathered round thy hearth
V, hen every eye thal minc could moot
With love's dear lustre shone;
And every voice mine ear would greet
Wit' love's own gentle tone.
They speke of grief that tiniewould bring,
Of cares that swiftly come;
How soon must youth* its requiem sing,
Thov aaid, o'er pleasure's tomb,
I heeded not those warnings when
The world was yet to me
So full of joy and hope as then,
I thought it could not bc;
And day by day I fondly wove
Briffbt dreams of future bliss.
And fancied coming years would prove
As full of joy as this;
But few, bow few, since then have past,
With many a grief and care;
Yet now I feel how true, alas!
Those gentle warnings were.
Now other forms and stranger feet
Are gathered in that home,
And stranger hearts and voices meet
Around that old hearthstone.
The flowers 'replanted gayly bloom
To meet another's gaze,
Our roses shed their sweet perfume
For other lips to praise,
The form, tho ever tender voice-.
That blessed our early home;
Those lips that bade our hearts rejoice
Are hushed within the tomb;
In lands a thousand miles away
He's sleeping with the dead.
And thick the tall green grass, they .say.
Waves o'er his narrow In d.
My heart is sad, oh! memory cease,
The dream of youth is o'er:
I weep again; peace, memory, peace,
For I can bear no more!
From thoughts like these ?ny spirit shrinks,
Recall them not r.nain:
Thou canst not bind the scattered links
Of love's dissevered chain,
back to my heart the wanderers cast,
There let them oversleep.
Where thou, "pale guardian of the past,"
Thy lonely vigils keep!

NEW YORK, July 14, 1865.
MESSRS. HERRING A- Co.-GENTLEMEN:
Though the destruction of tho American
Museum has proved a serious loss to my?
self and the public. I am happy to verify
thc old adage, that "It's an ill wind that
blows nobody good," and, consequently,
congratulate you that your well known
safes have again demonstrated their supe?
rior fire-proof qualities in an ordeal of un?
usual severity.
The safe you made for me sonic time
ago was in the office of the Museum, on
thc second floor, back part of thc building,
and in the hottest of the fire.
After twenty-four hours of trial, it was
found among the debris, and on opening
it this dav has yielded up its contents in
very good order- books,papers, policies of
insurance, bank bills, all in condition for
immediate use, and a noble commentary
on the trustworthiness of Herring's Fire?
