BY MBS. M. J. PRESTON.
\ simple, sodded mound of earth,
With not a line above it
With onlv daily votive dowers
To prove that any love it;
The token Hag that silently
Each breeze's visit numbers,
Alone keeps martial ward above
The hero's dreamless slumbers.
No name! no record! Ask the world -
Tho world has heard his story
It all its annals can unfold
A prouder talc of glory!
Ii ever merely human Ufe
Hath taught diviner moral
If over round a worthior brow
Was (wined a purer laurel?
Humanity's responsive heart
Concedes Ids wondrous powers,
And pulses with a tenderness
Almost akin to ours;
Nay, not to om s-for ns he poured
His life-a rich libation
And on adoring souls ice bear
This blood of consecration.
A twelvemonth only siucc his sword
Went flashing thro' the battle -
A t welvemonth only since his cal?
li card war's last deadly rattle,
And vet have countless pilgrim feet
'Alie pilgrim's guerdon paid him,
And weeping women como to see
The placo whore they have laid him.
Contending armies* bring in turn
Their meed of praise or honor.
And Tahas here has paused to bind
Tho cypress wreath upon her.
It seems a holy sepulchre,
Whoso sanctities can waken
Aliko thc love of friend or foe
Ol' Christian or of Pagan!
They come to own his high emprise,
Who Hod in frantic masses
Before tho glittering bayonet
That triumphed at Manassas;
Who witnessed Kcrnstown's fearful odds.
As on their ranks he thundered,
D?liant as thc storied Greek
Amid his brave three hundred!
They will recall thc tiger spring,
The wise retreat-the rally,
Tho tireless march, thc tierce pursuit
Through many a mountain valley.
Cross Keys unlock new paths to fame,
And Port Republic's story
Wrests from his over-vanquished foes
Strange tributes to his glory!
Cold Harbor rises to their view
Tho Cedar's gloom is o'er them,
And Antietam's rough-wooded heights
Stretch mockingly before them.
The lurid flames of Frcdericksburg
Bight grimly they remember,
That lit the frozen night's retreat
That wintry-wild December.
Tho largesse of this praiso is flung
With bounty rare and regal;
Is it because the vulture fears
No longer the dead eagle?
Nay! rather far accept it thus
An homago true and tender,
As soldier unto soldier's worth,
As brave to bravo wih render!
But who shall weigh tho worldlcss grief
That leaves in tears its traces,
As round their loader crowd again
Those bronzed and veteran faces?
Thc "old brigade" ho loved so well
The mountain men who bound him
With bavs of their own winning, ere
A tardier fame had crowned Iiim.
Tho legions who had seen his glance
Across the carnage flashing,
And thrilled to catch his rising "charge
Above tho volley crashing;
Who oft had watched tho lifted hand
The inward trust betrayij?,
And felt their courage grow Sublime
While they beheld him praying.
Good knights and true as ever drew
Their swords with knightly Boland,
Or died at Sobi?ski's side
For love of niartyrd Poland;
Or knelt with Cromwell's "Ironsides,"
Or sung with brave Gustavus,
Or on tho field of Austerlitz
Breathed out their dying ".?Ires/"
Bare fame! rare name! if chanted praia
With all tho world to listen
If pride that sweUs a nation's soul-^
If freemen's tears that glisten
If pilgrim's shining love-if grief,
Which nought may soothe or sever
If these can consecrate, this spot
Is sacred ground forever!

miIE NEW YORK NEWS HAS BATTLED
I against despotism for lour years ol'
blood and ternir, in assertion of t ? i ? - sanc?
tity of tb? Constitution. \ patriotism
sufficiently broad to embrace both sections
lias been its only guide, and it refora non*
with honest pride to its record to show that
it oas not turned to thc right or tho left
uinler all thc violence of arbitrary power.
True to its principles as THE NI'.WS lias
been through thc reign of terror, it chal?
lenges public confidence in its honesty and
indepi nd?m e for thc future.
Tho political transition of th<\ present
dav opens to THE NI'AVS a new and wider
field of usefulness. Standing now, as it
always bas, ?ni thc inviolability of tb?' Con?
stitution, according to tho interpretation of
tin- strict constructionists, it presents a
rallying ground For all, in both sections,
who a re-friends of a generous conservatism.
As a tim' and tried exponent <>f sectional
amit y, it occupies a position which makes it
thc fitting mediator in holding up to thc
party of order, in both sections, interests
and principles that gave breadth and vi?
tality to their alliance. As an interscc
tional agent, devoted to Freedom ol'elec?
tion, to trial by jury, bi the sain t ?ty of tho
habeas corpus, and opposed now, as for
Four year^Sf t ern ir it bas been, to the cen?
tralization that dures to trampli. the
rights of Slates, North or South, THE
NEWS places itself as a candidate for sup?
port before thc great bodv of this once free
people.
The circumstance;! of the moment make
thc dissemination of the principles of TUE
NEWS a duty of individual patriotism.
Every man who concurs in ?ts doctrine
must, if lc entertain a true sense of free?
dom, do so i M no spirit of indifference, but
rather with thc earnestness of*a high trust.
Justified, nay bound, in bis love of liberty,
to do so.the proprietor places the canvass iic
makes lu re ?d' thc public generally in thc
hands of those men who give him th?? ap?
proval of t heir consciences as his individual
agents. Every reader OFTHE NEWS cannot
avoid thc conviction of duty which is here
pointed out as thc ground of thc request,
that he urges Hs claims for a willer support
upon all ot his friends and neighbors who
give their earnest sympathies to thc cause
of "strict construction, intcrscctional con?
ciliation, and all the rights of th?' citizens
under thc system set np by our fathers of
liberty regulated by law. Thc proprietor
of TUE News calls, therefore, upon good
and true Conservatives throughout thc
country, to discharge, to their convictions
of political right at this great crisis in thc
country's fortunes, thc duty of giving to
tho influence of his paper, daily, semi?
weekly or weekly, thc wider power for good
which it seeks lu re through thc service of
its individual supporters.
