Report received aud adopted. The following report was submitted" by the Oommittee on Fire Depart? ment: To his Honor die Mayor and Alder-, men of the city of Columbia. G^N-TLEMEX : Your Committee on Fire Department deem it a duty they owe to your honorable body, ns well as to the community you represent, to give a statement of the present status of the department. It consists ! of about fifty men, consolidated into one organization-composed of the members Of three chartered compa? nies who were doing duty separately ; before tho destruction of the city- ' and one first-class engine, with GOO feet of hose. Previous to the 17th day of February, 1SG5, this city could boast, without presumption, of as well a regulated and efficient fire department as any city of its size in tho world, viz: two first-class en? gines, one hook and ladder truck, one second-class engine, 150 whites, with fifty colored inen--making a force of 200 men-with over 2,000 feet of substantial lending hose. With a department thus constituted, together with the supply of water furnished by tho city, it was seldom that a fire spread to any great extent, j It is the desire of your Committee ] to see the department once more re suming its former prestige. Under | the present state of the finances of | tho city, little can be done now to aid j the work-it is, however, necessary! that an efficient tire department j should bo kept up. A re-organiza- j tion can be effected by the joiut I efforts of the individual companies : ! and what assistance your honorable \ \ body can bestow in the way of fur ; nishing material for the re-building ? of the engine houses which were de- ; i stroyed. I Your Committee earnestly urge the : j importance of this subject and the j i claims it has upon your considera? tion. Respectfully submitted, j. MCKENZIE, W. T. WALTER. T. W. RADCLIFFE. Committee. " lu connection with tho above re? port, the following resolution was offered and adopted: Resolved, That to aid and assist tho firemen of this city in re-constructiug their companies, this Council do here? by grant the use of as many of the old city brick as may be necessary for 'the ro-building" of the two engine ' houses which were destroyed by fire ou the night of the 17th of February, 1865.
