THE POWEB AND AUTHORITY OF THE
PRESIDENT.-Tho, "National Intelli?
gencer," of Thursday, pithily says:
Wc are told by the constitutional
pundits of the radical party, that thc
legislative power of this nation is
vested exclusively in the Congress of
tue United States, and that it is a
gross .stretch of authority for the !
President to assume the slightest law- :
making function. Have not treaties j
the force ot' lav.? and does not the;
President negoc?ate them, subject- to j
tlie ratification of the Senate? Have
not the regulations issued by the de- i
partments ult the sanction of Jaw? :
Are not the proclamations of the Pre- ?
sident and tho general orders of the
Commander-in-chief as binding upou
citizens and t'.ie cotirts also, as the
acts of the J 'Cg isla ai re, until they ure j
set aside by co inpotent tribunals? It j
would be well for these gentlemen to I
remember that the,-President is not I
the mere cipher to which they wo.uld
reduce him, and that the rights and
the duties of the several departments
of the Government have been clearly
defined by the instrument for which
they profess so much reverence, but
the obligations ol" which they aro so
flatly disregarding.
SILK MANUFACTURE IN CALIFORNIA.
A letter from San Francisco says:
The first results of our newly estab?
lished silli'manufactory were exhibited
in a window a few days ago, being a
d^ess pattern which no lady need be
ashamed to wear. The raw material
is at present imported from Chiua,
but the day is not far distant when
we will raise it at home, as it has been
demonstrated that thc climate is par?
ticularly favorable to the silk worm,
and parties are going into it largely.

Tho cause ot fever is thc contamination of
?the blood by some morbific agent. The
nerves 'connected with nutrition and or?
ganic Contractility suffer alteration in their
composition. The muscles, deprived of
nervous influence, begin to waste, and this
waste produces heat. Tho heart is in?
creased in its action, and the blood is ren?
dered still more impure by receiving tho
wasted tissues by the continued action of
thc morbid agent, as well as by the func?
tions of the lungs, liver and spleen being
impede-'.. Purify, therefore, the springs nf
life, the blood. Use the ''Queen's Delight,"
the great blood remedy, and all morbid
agents will be removed. Tho Queen's De?
light has cured many cases of contamina?
tion of tho blood, i-hiil and fever, typhoid
fever: ernptisc fever will be prevented by
the free usc of the Queen's Delight. For

I?IS OX THK ALK KT! DANGER IS
AT UANDI-This has been a sickly season.
The medical faculty prophecy evil in the
i future. Tiny think pestilence is on the
wing for America. Suppose this to bc
! true, what is thc best defence against it?
Redoubled nervous vigor. This is tba only
protection against panic, as well ad against
thc "principle ol infection. Why do not
those who predict the epidemic propose an
! adequate preventive? There is one-a
! tonic, nervine and alterative, competent to
i shield the system against tho subtle ele*
j menta of disease, whether they float hither
j on the winds from distant lands, or rise
like vapor from our own soil, or are incor
? poratcd with the universal fluid. This one
j preventive, of which there is no duplicate
j among the compounds, either of tho Old
! World or the New, is HOSTETTER'S STO
j MACH RITTERS.
j Remember that it is a specific for all the
complaints which lay the system open to
visitations of deadly epidemics. If yon aro
, dyspeptic, it renews ti:-: \i"or of your di
I g?stive powers, gives you appetite and re
! stores your cheerfulness. If you are
i nervous, it invigorates every fibre of your
j nervous system, from thc base of thc brain,
j where it begins, to the extremities, where
j it terminates. If you are bilious, it disci
j plines your unruly liver and brings the
I action of that organ into harmony with
! the laws of health. It is, in short, an in
! vigorant and alterative so powerful that
j nature, with Hostcttor's Ritters for her
; ally, may bid defiance alike to native mala
I ria and foreign infection. If this enemy we
j hear ol'-this disease which is desolating
: Europe-is really bound hitherward, it bc
! hooves the prudent to put on their armor,
i to clothe themselves with invulnerability
i as far as human means will permit, by pre?
paring the system for resistance with this
pure vegetable antidote. Nov IG +G
