TECH INCREASE or THE GOLD SUP
PI^.-The now gold field lately dis?
covered at the month of the Am o or
River wilTprobably ewell the annual
production of gold to a higher figure
than it has over yet ic?cliu?, und
when we consider that, with the im?
provements constantly being made in
mining and reducing prOcesset), the
supply of the fields already known
becomes every year largor and larger,
wa must expect a oontinued increase
in the price of exchangeable articles
. all over the civilized world. What
that increase bas been here, with our
paper money, we all know; but if we
were to resume npeoie payments at
once, we should, by that means, re
torn to the prices of eight years ago.
Lu Mr. Buggies' report on the coin?
age, some very interesting statistics
are given upon the subject of this in?
crease of the gold supply. It ap?
pears that the gold coinage of the
United States for the fifty-seven years
preceding that in which the gold
fields of California were first discover?
ed (1849) was only $85,000,000, while
for the next two years it was $94,
000,000, and for the next fifteen
years $665,000,000; and while the
total coinage of the United States,
Great Britain and Franoe, previous
to 1851, was less than $1,000,000,000,
it was, in the fifteen years following,
$2*000,000,000. That is, these three
nations have now in use three times
as much gold ooin as they had fifteen
years ago. Under suoh conditions,
tho prices of everything must ad?
vance, paper money or no paper
money; and, as a matter of fact, they
' haye advanced in Europe as well as
here, though of course not to so
great an extent.-Neto York Sun.
A few days ago, General James
Longstreet called at the residente of
General Hancock, in Now Orleans,
and sent in his card. Gen. Hancock
was then engaged with some friends,
ladies and gentlemen. He immediate?
ly left them to receive his old army
friend, more recently his foe, but
now again his friend, and after a
warm greeting, insisted upon con?
ducting General Longstreet into the
parlor and introducing him to the
company there assembled. The Btyle
of the introduction was peculiar.
"Ladies and gentlemen," said Gen.
Hancock, "allow me to introduce to
you a gallant gentleman, to whom I
am indebted for an ungraceful limp,
aod whom I bad the misfortune to
wing in the samo combat." Although
tho company was composed exclu?
sively of ladies and gentlemen whose
sympathies were on the Union side
in the late war, the incident excited
a profound and pleasurable sensation.
GENUINE WIT.-A distinguished
Southern lady, who is the wife of a
prominent and extreme radical, re?
siding in one of the Northern States,
while engaged in pluoking the gray
bain from her husband's moustache,
was naked by him, ,lWhat aro you
doing, my dear?" "Only carrying
out your own policy, sir; exterminat?
ing thc whites toe the uunefii of the
blacks," was the witty reply.
i The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland,
a title which sounds ominously like
that of military governor, has become
alarmed, and declared that funeral
honors to Fenian heroes, martyrs, or
convicts, are seditious, and prohibits
them in future. "Tho shamrock is
forbid by law to grow on Irish
ground." ^
A youug gentleman of Chatta?
nooga, Tenn., married three months
ago, received a present from n former
lady love on New Year's day of a
package of his love letters. His
wife got hold of tho document flrat.
and there was a goQd-n^r.ed cry in the}
family for several dirys. i

The Italian newspapers complain
of the great increase of brigandage
in that country, the brigands fre?
