It is now boldly charged at Wash- |
ington that tho impeachment of tho ?
President waa contrived to divert j
public attention from tho frauds now
being exposed in tho Treasury De?
partment. Tho developments, so
far, arosnid to bo positively astound?
ing. For greater facility in priuting
bonds and currency, the original
plates wcro duplicated, triplicated,
and, in some instances, multiplied
ad libitum. They were then used re?
gardless of proper care, or system,
and in many instances Lave since
passed into thu hands of persons in
no wise connected with tho Govern?
ment, who are doubtless, for any?
thing known to tho contrary, yet at
work with them. Tho extra coupons
of tho bonds aro being daily paid at
the Treasury office, simply becnuso it
is impossible to detect the difference
between tho originals and the dupli?
cates-tho genuino aud tho bogus.
No ono seems to have the least idea
of the extent of Ibo fraud, although
Thad. Stevens hazards a guess at one
and n half billions, thus making the
public debt four billions, iustead of
two and a half, as represented. One
item alone points out from sixty to
one thousand fivo hundred millions
not yet accounted for. The most
shameful laxity aud carelessness
seems to have existed in every de?
partment. No record has been kept
of spoiled impressions. Thirty
thousaud strips of bank note paper,
capable of printing threo hundred
millions, have disappeared. A deficit
of sixty millions is shown in the
fractional currency, besides an over?
issue of twonty-fivo millions; to say
nothing of tho vast sums squandered
by defaulting officials. The disclos?
ure of such a gigantic swindle in?
volves, of course, all degrees of crime.
Not only theft, but perjury, is
? boldly charged upon grave Senators.
The utmost alarm, it is evident, per?
vades financial circles, and Senator
Sherman's warning would seem to in?
dicate that wdiero bad begins there is
"worse remains behind."
-
ACCIDENT AJJ FIRE.-Between 12
and 1 o'clock, on Thursday night
last, u fire broke out in tho store?
house owned aud occupied by Mr.
T. J. Woods, and being under such
headway, nothing could bo removed
beforo its total destruction. There
wero at tho time several persons
sleeping iu the house; none of them
know anything of its origin, and
each ono had but time to take care
of himself. Wo regret to learn that
Mr. Woods, in trying to Bavo his
books and papers, got very badly
burned, though it i?, ucl thought his
case will bo fatal. Tho lower part of
tho building contained a small stock
of goods on which there was no in?
surance, but wo are informed thnto n
tho building there was an insurance
of Si,500. - Darlington Southerner.
A New York papor says that old
maids aro on tho increase in that city,
but it don't explain how thoy can in?
crease and be old maids at the same
time.
