THE NEW ENGINES OF WAR.-The
Brazilian Times contains official re?
ports of the success of the Brazilian
iron-olads in passing the fortress of
Humaitn, which is said to have no
equal in sizo and position in the
United States. This stronghold, it
appears, had 200 heavy guns in
barbette, most of them of approved
modern pattern, and was besides
sustained by four other heavy for?
tresses, and commanded the narrow?
est channel of the Paraguay Hiver
for a hundred miles. Torpedoes had
also been laid in the channel, but it
was believed that these had been
disabled or carried off by a great rise
in the river. The Brazilian monitor
fleet oonsisted of the Bahia, four 150
pound rifles in two turrets; Bun oro,
four guns in casemates; Ta mau dur a,
four guns in casemates, and three
others, each having one seventy pound
rifle in turret. These adventurous
vessels were exposed, in a narrow
channel, to tho fire of eighty cannon
at short range, the majority of which
were 68-pounders, and two or three
150-ponnders. The result will be
received in naval circles as comflrma
tory of the excellence of the monitor
system among iron-olads. It appears
that the Emperor of Brazil availed
himself at tho outset of the war of
American experience in monitor ves?
sels, the Brazilian Ministerin Wash?
ington having sent him completo
specifications of our own vessels of
that kind, though they wero built at
Bio Janeiro and in Englaud. If
floating fortresses, as recent events
wonld seem to demonstrate, can be
made superior to permanent ones, it
is not unlikely that, in time, the
whole system of coast defences will
bo revolutionized, antliron-clads bo
relied on for defence os well as attack.
The Brazilians and Paraguayans
have shown as great determination
and endurance in, their protracted
war as auy people in the world. Tho
Paraguayans, in particular, tho weak?
er party, have borne up agaiust tre?
mendous odds with a heroism and
perseverance which have excited tho
admiration of mankind; and'which,
whether they aro overpowered or not,
will give them a lusting rcuown.
Evou tho successful passage of
Humait a by tho Brazilian fleet does
not seem, if tho latest intelligence is
to be credited, to have put au end to
their reeietuiii ?-. ?he ?&ble de?
spatches, of Wednesday, announced
that Paraguay had brought the ullied
powers to a defensive position.
