DYSPEPSIA-?THE WHOLE STORY LS A
NUT-SHELL.-Thc office of tho stomach is to
convert the food into a cream-liko semi fluid,
called chyme. This is effected partly by thc
action of a solvout, called tho gastric juice,
which oxudos from tho coating of the stomach,
aud partly by a mechanical movement of that
organ, which churns, as it were, the dissolviug
aliment. Tho chymo paescs from tho stomach
into tho duodenum, or entrance to thc bowels,
whore it is subjected to the action of tho bile,
and tho nutritious portion of it converted into
a fluid called chyle, which eventually becomes
Now, it is evident that if the great solvent,
the gastric juice, is not produced in sufficient
quantity, or if tho mechanical action of the sto?
mach is not suflicicntly brisk, the first process
of digestion will bo but imperfectly performed.
It is also clear that if the liver, which plays
such an important part in changing the nou?
rishing portion of tho chyme into thc material
of tho blood, is congested, or in any unnatural
condition, tho second process will not be tho?
roughly accomplished. The result of tho two
failures is dyspepsia, complicated with bilious?
The mode in which HOSTETTER'S LIT?
TER'S oneratc in such cases is this: They in?
vigorate tho cellular membrane of the sto?
mach, which evolves tho gastric juice, thereby
insuring an ample Sufficiency of the Huid tu
completely dissolve the food. They al?o act
upon the nerve? of tho stomach, causing an
acceleration of tho mechanical movement ne?
cessary to reduce the food to a homogenous
mass. They also act specifically upon the
liver, strengthening it, and so enabling it to
produce an ample Hud regular supply of bile,
for tho purpose of convei ting the nutritious
particles of the chyme iuto chyle, aud promote
the passage through the bowel.-; of tho useless
In this way. HOSTETTER'S BITTERS cure
dyspepsia and liver complaint. The explaua
tion is plain, simple, philosophical and true.
