A LUDICROUS AFFAIR.-We learn that
there was quite an amusing rebellion, on
a small scale, at the Knox school, a few
days ago. One of the school-marms
undertook to chastise a colored damsel,
who resisted, when the scholars came to
the rescue, and a "free fight" occurred
between the wards of the nation and
their benefactresses, in which a good
deal of Yankee calico was damaged.
The scholars declared that "no nasty
stinking Yankees should whip them,"
and used various other pet names, which
we cannot record.-Athens (Ga.) Banner.
.A NEW MOTOR.-A Frenchman, in
New York, has invented a new electric
motor, whioh, by its cheapness and sim?
plicity, will work a revolution in all
industries. It is said that it will operate
twelve hours, at an expense of ten cents,
employing many horse power. Further
experiments are to be made. The power
may be applied to small or great things
to a sewing machine, a plough or a rail?
An inventive Frenohmnn, who wit?
nessed the petroleum conflagration, at
Bordeaux, recently, suggested a new
mode of harbor defence: "In case a
hostile fleet should bombard a port, all
that would be necessary would be to pour
several barrels of petroleum on the water
at ebb tide and light it. Wooden ships
would be burned, while on iron ships
the orews would be roasted."

Mr. M. M. Piser, a wealthy citizen of
New York, attempted to jump from a
train on the New Haven Road, a few
days ago, fell and was crushed to death.
When will jumping from trains be dis?

hear of casualties .similar tu tho above.
