L. Stone, who, in the conrso of some interesting reminiscences of tho rebellion, spoke of David Tilghman as tho officer selected by thc Confederate Government to take charge of the treasure and archivos. On tho morning of Mr. Davis' cap? ture, says Mr. Stone, Tilghman -waited upon him nt his bedside and said: "Mr. Davis, by this map you may Bee that the enemy are here; such and such is the situation of the roads. If you como ?with me, you will be able to leave the country in safety. If you do not, you will be'captured in rive hours." To Mr. Davis replying, ourtly, that he "knew his own business best." Tilghman con? tinued, "Very well, sir, I have been en? trusted with the treasure and archives, and propose to secure them, even at the peril of tho loss of your favor and of my nie. I shall start at once, by the route I have marked out." Tho result is well known. In less than five hours Mr. Davis was a prisoner; but the archives were safe. When, a few weeks ofter, in the recesses of the forest, Tilghman learned that all was lost, ho alone, and with his own hands, buried the treasro and archiven; and unless, during the four days that elapsed be? tween parting with mo and bis unto? ward death, he revealed the spot, tho se? cret as to tho whereabouts of the ar? chives is forever buried; and as long ns they shall be kept from the pon of man, so long shall the story bo a monument to our brother's unswerving fidelity. This is the true history of the archives of tho Southern Confederacy, although rumors are from time to time set afloat of their being now in the vaults of this bank, and now of that. In order to Bhow tho enormous magni? tude of the public debt of this country, the Hon. J. Proctor Knott produces tho following curious statistics: "Each green? back dollar bill is about seven inches in length. Place 2,500,000,000 of them in a line and it will be over 250,000 miles longl It is 25,000 miles around the earth. The public debt would thereforo make a band of greenback dollars that conld encircle the globe more than ten times! It is 240,000 miles to the moon. If this is so, our debt would make a rope 1 of greenback dollars long enough to ca? ble the moon to the earth, and have over 10,000 miles to Bag!" There were thirteen murders, stabbiug cases and burglaries in the unrecon- i strncted city of New York on Sunday and ?Sunday night last, with several wards to hear from. To all "Whom it May Concern.
