THE DAILY 'Let our Jutt Censure Attend tho True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C.. SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 9, 1870. VOL. VI-NO. 174. THE CLINTON ,AFFAIR, J-QQ IM "a^ wo aie abl? t? gather tuja ?aote,* ?od we bave conversed with" several gentlemen wUo were pr?sent, abd Sifted the matter tho? roughly, the cas?is Sa follower Aparty of gentlemon, about five m number, went to Clinton to request that the arms thara kept would not be given ont to the colored men, it being ascertained that such a purpose was contemplated. The person or persons in possession gave the required promise? ana the gentlemen on returning were fired into by a party of colored men, tho fire was returned and three or four of the assailants were wounded. Here that matter ?nded. At night notwithstanding the promise the arms were distributed. On Mon? day morning some 800 armed negroes gathered in the vicinity of Clin? ton, sud threats were mudo that the country within five miles round should bo burnt. Becoming apprized of .this alarming condition of affairs, white citi? zens from, the purrounding country quickly turned out, and soon a large force had collected. Acting under au? thority of JVL>. Smith Jones, Sheriff of Laurens, a committee of fivo gentlemen was sent to the insurgents to ascertain the natnre of the warlike attitude. They were told that they had been informed the white men were about to take their arma-another one ot the fadioal plans for promoting strife-and that they had turned out to prevent it. Tho commit? tee assured them that no such idea had been entertained, that tho white men did not want their guns, had no uso for them, and would not touch them if they ; were lying out in the road. On being questioned as to the threats of burning they denied ever having made any, and that being convinced now that they were wrongly informed as to the white men intending to take the guns, would go to their homes peaceably. The committee said that was all that was desired, and then returned to the Sheriffs posse. The insurgents in a short time dispersed with tho exception of about sixty who loitered about the town until near night. This is the su tn and substance of tho plain story as related by reliable partici? pants, the wild, exaggerated and un? truthful reports to^ the contrary, thou? sands of which oro afloat, and all of which are eagerly picked up and rolled as sweet morsels under radical tongues and fashioned into paragraphs suitable for radical purposes.-Neioberry Herald. Telford, Missionary hi China, now visiting bis homo in Pennsylvania.] WASHINGTON, PENN. DEAR SIRS: During a residence of some ten years as a missionary in Siam and China, I "found your Vegetablo Pain Killer a most valu? able remedy for that fearful scourge, Cholera. In administering the medicine, I found it most effeotual to give a teaspoonful of Paiu Killer in a gill of hot water, sweetened with sugar; thon, after about fifteen minutes, begin I to give about a teaspoonful of the same mix* lure every few minutes until relief was ob? tained. Apply hot applications to tho extremi? ties. Batho the stomach with the Pain Killer, olear, and mb the limbs briskly. Of those who had tho Cholera, and took tho medicino faithfully in the way stated above, eight out of ten recovered. Truly yours, R. TELFORD. If attacked with the Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Cramp, Coho, don't delay nae of PAIN KILLER. FUNOOHOW, CHINA. DEAR SIBB: During a long residence in Chi? na, I have used your invaluable Pain Killer, both in my own family and among the Chi? nese, and have fouud it a moat excellent me? dicine In the eummor of 18G2 and '63, while residing in Shanghai, I found it an almost cor tain cure for Cholera, if used in time. In? deed, using it in a great many instances, I do not remember failing in a singlo ease. For throo years, I have been residing in thia place, more than fifty milea from a physician, and have been obliged often to fall npon my own resources in ease of sickness. The Chinese como to us in great numbers for medicine and advice. Though without medical knowledge ourselves, the few simple remedies we can command are so much in advance even of their physicians, that we havo almost daily applications. We allow them to come, becauao it brings us in contact with them, and opona a door of usefulness. In diarrhoea, coho, vo? miting, cholera, coughs, etc, your Pain Killer bas beeu my chief medicine, yours vory truly, T. P.CRAWFORD. ?o~ The Pain Killer ia auld by all dealers in Family Medicines.
