Hau?Y Buox.^? despatch fi om Saratoga-ari noonee* the" 'death at that f)laoo ol Hon. lieu ry Buck, of South Caro? ma, one Of tho most widely known, ot the large planters of South Carolina. Mr. Book was a native of the Stato of Maine, and was horn in the year 1800. Ho settled on the Wu ccu maw Hiver, in South Carolina, when a young mao, and founded the town of Bucksvillo, which has since become on important I point for tho shipment of Southern lumber. Mr. Buck accumulated a large fortune. At the beginning of the late war, he was tho owner of ovor 500 DO groes, and was regarded ns a model master in his relations towards them. His plantation was described nt length in Edmund Kirke's book, "Among tho Pines." Mr. Buck passed his summers at the North, and wns almost ns well known in this city and nt Saratoga as he was at home. He was a genial and courtly gentleman, and in spite of bis Northern birth exhibited most of tho chnractcristio traits of tho wealthy Southern planter. Aversion to politics kept him out of public affairs during tho larger part of his lifo, but a few years ago ho cousenseutcd to servo his fellow citizens, and ut tho timo of his death he was the most conspicuous of tho five Democratic members of tho South Caro? lina Senate.-New York World. WEALTH OP NEW Yo uk.-Tho assessed value of real estate (immovable proper? ty) in the Stato of New York is $1,532, 720,907; with personal property added, the total is nearly 2,000,000,000. New York County is assessed for $084,140,708 real, $284,142,699 personal property. Bating the population of tho State at 5,000,000, this would give an average of $400 to each inhabitant. BAD. -In his charge to the grand jury, in Now York, on Tuesday, Judge Ingra ham remarked that the number of homi? cides which have taken place since he last held court were more than had oc? curred during any previous time of the some length in his recollection. He re? commended the stern administration of the law as tho best cure. A paper says the waste places of New York city have been made to blossom like the rose. That may nil bo, but there are many places iu tho great me? tropolis which do not smell like the rose. * Wanted-A Cook and Washer, FOR & SMALL F AM I Li Y, either whito or colored.
