We regret to see that the barbarous amuse?
ment of '(Gander Pulling" formed a part of
the entertainment at ? late fair in this State.
Such a thing. happened once in Columbia,
about ten years ago, on Christmas day. Next
morning the following poem appeared in tho
old Soui/i Oarollnian, whioh BO plainly set
forth the enormity of the thing, that tho
practice has never been repeated hero. We
reproduce it in the Pnoxix as a word in sea?
What sight is that? Immortal souls
Fitted to enduro ?xtr?meet agony, or to enj' y
Fullness of bliss, aro gat acred round a Bprcau
Whero hangs a bird, hoad downwards;
Its powerful feet mado fast with thongs;
Its membranes tough; its living muscles
And Blow to yield.
And horsos aro prepared, as if to run a race,
Naught else; for in their hands their rulers
boar no VreapimB.
High in mid heaven two angel watchers
Looking with deepest sorrow on the sccno be?
As loath to stay; but, crowding tho air,
Tho bosta of hell close hover round, invisible.
Tho riders mount. Oh, that their eyes were
For each horse bears, besides his mortal
? messenger of darkness, who, clinging round
Of him who rides, pours into his cruel heart
Frosh thonghts of cruelty. Ho spurs his
Faster he rides, and faster still, cager for
He grasps the nook and gives a pull, that
draws a scream of agony.
Another-still another passes by,
Till, life exhausted, the dead muscle yields,
And tho1 last rider carries off the prize.
What exaltation in the looks of thone dark
' * spirits, '
As each rider grasped tho anointed nock.
Fit sport for thom! But wasit the Bufferings
of a bird
That filled the devils' hearts with joy?
Nay, surely I That was not enough. But they
That souls that took delight in suoh a sport as
Were flt to bear them company, and could ho
To cruelty of any kind towards their fellows.
They know that God is lovo, and that tho
Obtain his mercy; and when they BOO a heart
That suffering cannot touch it, they may well
For how can you, O, men of oruel hearts,
Ask God for mercy? Ask mercy you your?
selves refuse to givel
Yet if His mercy comes not, whore shall you
find your place,
But with the spirits lost, who show no morey!
Your oruel deeds are marked hy One who is all
And shall not He avenge? Oh, by His mercies,
ero He wakes in wrath,
Learn mercy! There was suffering ouco
That can atono for e'en your cruel thoughts.
One gave His lifel But at His feot your
hearts must melt,
Ereyou receive His mercy!
