A SPEIIIIINQ TEST.-At a teachers'
meeting, recently held in Newburg, New
York, a list of fifty words was givtm out,
anti of the ninety-four teachers present
not one succeeded in spelling every word
in the list correctly. The ono nearest
aoouraoy failed ou but two words, wbilo
the dunce of the convention blundered
at forty-five words out of tho fifty. In
the niuety-four papers examined tuero
were 2,603 mistakes! Tho word "cuohi
nation" was the sorest trial of all,' there
being no leas than fifty different spell?

MAN, a resident of tho County of Fairfield,
waa deliberately shot and killed while stand?
ing in tho door of her. residence, in tho said
County of Fairfield, about 10 o'clock on the
night of tho 20th July last; and whereas tho
assassins aro unknown to thc Jury of inquest
empanelled in said case:
Now, therefore, I, ROIORT K. SCOTT,
Governor of tho Stato of South Carolina, in
order that justice may bo dono, and tho ma?
jesty of tho law vindicated, do hereby offer a
reward of FIVE HUNUKED DOLLARS for
tho apprehension of thc perpetrators of said
murder, and their delivery in any jail of this
Stato, with proof to convict.
In testimony whereof, I havo hereunto set
my hand aud caused tho Great Seal
of tho State to bo affixed, at Colum
