'Let oar just Censures
BY J. A. SELBY.
COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 27, 1872. VOL. VII-NO. iM,
ABUSE OF THE SOUTH.-The Philadel?
phia Age says:
Jost ab the moment that the country
ought to present an unbroken front to
Europe, the Radical party io Congress
again reject a general amnesty bill. In
order to vindicate this action of its party,
its organs open the flood-gates of vitupe?
ration on the South. Hero is a speci?
men from the Press:
"The Southern whites aro in a state of
ready revolt. They hate the Govern?
ment with a bitterer hatred than they
felt after secession and Bull Run."
[Press, February 15.
Here is a wholesale arraignment, not
only cf the white population of the
South, but of the whole system of Radi?
cal spoliation, disfranchisement and mit -
rule, that culminates in tho rejection of
general amnesty, ia order to carryon the
dirty trafilo in special pardons. This
has generated discontent at tho South,
and would do so anywhere on earth. We
need not point the moral by a reference
to Ireland. But the assertion that the
whole white population of the South is
in a state of ready revolt, is a monstrous
misrepresentation of the truth. That
the present state of things provokes re?
monstrance, discontent, newspaper ap?
peals and arguments against it, is what
no man need wouder.at. Assuredly it is
not reasonable to expect that Southern
men, horn with all the rights of Ameri?
can citizens, shall lie down content and
silent in their present condition. Nor
need wo desiro it. The corruption of
Radical administration at tho South has
spread, liko an infection, to the Nc'th.
You cannot have a government of fraud
and martial law confined to half a coun?
try, and freo, pure government exist ia
the other half. Wo need scarcely prove
thi? now in Philadelphia. We have felt
here the full fruits of Radical misrule,
and, indeed, tho samo article in the
Press, yesterday, that teemed with
abuse of tho South, ended with this apt
admission about tho state of things at
home: "If utterly reckless politicians
are allowed to rule in State and city,
even tho Grant locomotive will stop."
A LITTLE SCRAP OF HISTOUY.-If Vice
Prcsident Colfax should bo renominated
and re-elected, it will bo the first time,
with a single exooption, that a Yico-Pre
sident has been his own successor iu tho
history of our Government. Tho ex?
ception was thut of Daniel D. Tompkins,
of New York, who served as vice-Presi?
dent under tho two terms of President
Monroe, ono of which terms occurred in
what is historically known 09 the "ern of
good feeling"-from 1821 to 1825. Tho
instances in which a Vice-President, hus
stopped from that position to the Presi?
dency are six, to wit: John Adams,
Tilomas Jefferson, Mnrtin Vau Buren,
John Tyler, Millard Fillmore and Au
drow Johnson-tho threo latter succeed?
ing to tho Presidenoy on uccount of tho
demise of tho regularly elected incum?
bents whilo holding office.
Mr. Samuel Leckie, Jr., had a diffi?
culty with a colored draymau, named
Bennington Killingsworth, iu Augusta,
Qa., on thc 23d, when tho latter raised
an iron pin, as if ho intended to stritte
Leckie, who immediately fired, mid
killed the negro. A coroner's inquest
Galveston complains of sharks ia the
harbor, and laud-6harks [mako it unsafe
anywhere else in thut vioinity.
