'.Let our fust CemureB ^^^^^^^^?jsj^^^^f Attend the True Event."
BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING, JUNE ll, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 71.
The Greeks in the Levant have hit on
a new mode of converties ?fews. . One of
the stale [old fables had been revived
there to the effect that a Christian ohild
had been killed lately by Jews,' so as to
mix its blood with their bread at the
Passover. The spread of this tale in
flamed the neighboring Greeks with a
fine spirit of proselytism; so they began
by seizing aa unhappy Polish Jew,
smearing his hair and beard with tar,
and then setting it on fire. This con?
clusive argument was followed np by
others equally cogent and humane; those
of j the proscribed faith werejtortured in
every direotion, and at last the misera
i ble Hebrews sought and obtained shelter
in the houses of the Mohammedans. It
ie a mournful thing to s?e and to say,
but many of the countrymen of Leonidas |
are leaving no stone untamed to gain
for themselves the contempt and execra?
tion of mankind.
A destructive fire occurred in Roxboro,
N. G., on the night of tho 1st. The old
and new hotels and the lawyers' row
were destroyed. Loss aboot ?4,500.

object. Gentlomcn whoso whiskers are shy
of making their apperanco in force, or tho
fibres of whoso moustaches die close those
"magnificent distances" for which Washing?

article for improving the growth and beauty

the solemnity of the place into which he is
entering; stained glass should throw a mystic
light athwart the aisles; pulpit, altar, coiling
and galleries should be ornamented with figu?
