What Che Choir Bans; About the New
f Bonnet.
A fooliah little maiden bought a fooliah little
bonnet,
"With a ribbon and a feather and a little lace
upon it,
1 And that the other maidens of tho town
< might know it.
8he thought sho'd go to meeting next Sunday
just to show it.
But .though tho little bonnet was scarcely
' larger than a dime,
Tho potting of lt settled proved to be a work
of time;
So when 'twas fairly tied, all tho bells had
a topped their riuging,
And wu on she ca mo. to mooting, suro enough
the folks were singing.
Bo the foolfsh little maiden stood and waited
usa?? at tho door,
And sho shook her mules out behind and
smoothed them down bofore;
"Hallelujah! hallelujah!" aang tho choir
.above her head,
"Haidlyjmew youl hardly knew you!" were
tho words She thought they said.
Thia made the little maiden feel so very, very
croea,
That she <gave ber little mouth a twitoh, her
little head a toss;
For she- thought the very hymn they sang
was all about ber bonnet,
With the'ribbon and tho feather and tho bit
of lace upon it.
And she would not wait to listen to tho ser?
mon or tho prayer,
But pattered down the Bilent street and bur?
fi ried up the atair,
Till she'd reached ber little buroau, and in a
band-box on it
Had hidden, safe from critic's eye, her foolish
little bonnet.
Whioh proves, my little maidens, that each of
you will find
In every Sabbath service but an coho of your
. mind;
And that the little head that'd filled with silly
little aira,
Will never get a blessing from sermons or
from prayers.

? AT^I RIGHT.-How many of us but uso
the expression a dozen times a week, and
have it stick in the throat, at least half
of them? It is coming to be a hypocrit?
ical appendage of business and social in?
tercourse.
ii:A sponger goes behind the counter,
cuts off a dime's worth of tobacco or
oheese, with an excuso that'he wants a
"sample," and the grocery man says,
"that's all right.
A customer returns a pair of shoes to
the dry goods man, soiled and injured,
after a half a day's wear, granting, "they
are too small," and the merchant saye,
"that's all right."
A church member puta his name down
for twenty-five dollars to pay the preach?
er, and when called on, gives only ten,
with tba remark, that "times are too
hard;" and the parson says, "that's all
right"
. A loafer makes a regular practice of
coming into a printing office, and beg?
ging a copy of the paper, stating that
^be just wants to read it;" the edition is
short, and the editor groans with ghastly
politeness, "that's all right" .
An extravagant debtor tells a patient
creditor every time he meets him, that
he intends to pay the account "to-mor?
row, certain," and the poor man turns
off with .'that's all right"
And to it goes. It is all wrong, and
we say it's all right, and by onr want of
spirit and independence, encourage lazi?
ness, imposition, stinginess, and every
other sin under the sun.
AM ANGEL VISITS A GEORGIA METHO?
DIST CLERGYMAN.-We extract from the
Newnan Herald the following remarka?
ble statement:
?On Sabbath morning, Rev. R. W.
Bingham, Pastor of the Methodist
Ghnrob of this city, preached on the ri?
aitation of angels. Ho selected no par?
ticular text, bnt read many passages of
Scrip turo to provo that angels have often
visited the earth, bearing messages from
God? /and conversed with men and
women, and insisted that these angelic
"visitations are not limited to time and
placo; that the men and women of the
present day have seen angels and heard
them sing and talk as well as those men?
tioned in the Bible. After the preacher
had concluded this portion of his dis
course, he related his personal experi?
ence. He stated that God had permit?
ted his sainted wife (who died on the -
day of Jane,) since her death, to visit
him twice-once by night and onee by
day. He declared that on a certain
night, after her death, about the same
hoar of tho night on whioh she had en?
tered heaven, he was awakened by music,
sweeter than earth can know; that he
was fully aroused, with every power of
his mind in fall operation, and, in fact,
could see his wife, and hear and under?
stand her words as diatinotly as the con?
gregation oonld his. Mr. Bingham add?
ed: "I know I sm neither insane nor
superstitious, and yet I wonld as soon
doubt my own existence as the truth
and reality of what I have told yon."
A vigorous old agriculturist, living
near Abeline, Kansas, while hoeing corn
tho other day, chopped his big toe off
with his hoo. bot never stopped to pick
it np anal he had finished the row. He
then went back and fonnd the amputated
appendage; brushed the dirt off, and
carried it to *ho house where, with the
help of his, wife and some fruit jar wax,
he replooea it and then went to work
again. He is a self-made man, belongs
to a Greeley olnb, is a deacon in chu rob,
never imbibes tho ardent, swears nor
chews gum.
A MISUNDERSTANDING.-A parson ia
responsible for this story: "Poor Jones
died ?bile yon were away lost sommer.
In all my experience, I never saw so dis?
consolate and grief-broken a creature as
Soor little Mrs. Jones; it was very sud?
en, you know. I went to the bouse as
soon as I beard of it, I offered my sym
Eatby, but her sorrow was unoontrolla
le. In such cases, I think it best that1
the mourner should be left alone-So 11
prepared to depart."
"I wilt leave you, poor beloved one,"
said I, "with this injunction: Pray
firay that God will vouchsafe His com
orter; that He will enable you to per?
ceive the promised bow in the-"
"Oh, Teotor," she burst in, "how oan
you think of such a thing? It's too
too-boo premature, I'm 3urel"
"And," continued the old gentleman,
ehcoking the off rein and wheeling away
from the gate, "after some cogitation, I
fanoied that I discovered that the bow I
was talking about and the 'beau' she was !
thinking about, wasn't the oamo kind of |
a bow at all."
An exohange says an alligator very
gracefully masticated a valuable stag
hound belonging to a gentleman in
Eutow, the other day. As tho owner had
already ,lqst one dog in the same funny
way, he determined to bring to punish?
ment the fell destroyer, and baited six
large hooks with hog liver. Bat the
amusing creature gulped down the hog |
liver, books, and all, broke the line, and
leisurely swam away os happy as a clam.
The desperate dog owner ?B now lying in
wait on the river side, armed with a har?
poon big enough to catch a whale, and
Sroposing to go for that alligator as Bill
[ye went for the heathen Chinee-in a
way he'll despise.
A California lady, whom the earth?
quakes have inspired, writes that "he
terogenous parallaxes prismatically con?
verging are not due to the silicious in?
troductions of phospherioal asteroids,
but rather to parabolic stratification of
the igneous zygema." Why they have
earthquakes is no longer a mystery.
