A Few Plain Questions Which
Require Plain Answers.?A corres?
pondent of the Augusta Chronicle
and Sentinel propounds tho follow
ing questions to Mr. Alex H. Ste-|
phens:
Mr. Stephens, tho apologist of
Grant, will please answer tho
following questions for the en?
lightenment of his constituents;
Why did Grant detain Congress
when about to adjourn and send in
his recommendation of the passage
of the Enforcement Act?
Why did he recommend the pas?
sage of tho Civil Bights Bill, and
give the'impression that he would
veto the Bame if passed, and when
it passed sign tho said bill?
Why did he recommend the
overthrow of the Garland Govern?
ment and the substitution of the
Brooks Government at the point of
the bayonet?
Why did he sustain Sheridan
when the public denounced him?
Why did he appoint Major Mer?
rill to ride down the people of
Louisiana when he had dis?
graced the uniform of a Federal
officer in South Carolina, and had
received the pay of a rondos' go?
vernment for arresting- innocent
people and collecting vitiated evi?
dence to convict tho same?
I- want the above answered with?
out sophistry, dodging or subter?
fuge. _*
