The Tebbobs op the "Witness-Box.? .
Mr. tBeeeher's careful way of testifying {
reminds' a correspondent of the New i
York Evening Post^ot an anecdote of
Admiral Bailey, as follows: Bailey was
once summoned as a witoess in a civil

HiB* anxiety was increased by the warn?
ings of his friends^who were constantly
telling him to be on his guard, aa the
lawyers wonld bother him, and mako
him contradict himself and appear to bo
a liar. The old fellow hrfd a sleepless
night before the day of trial, and when
he entered the witness-box it was with a
nervousness such as ho had never ex?
perienced in going into battle, When
the firet question, "What is yonr name?"
was proposed to him, his hands fidgeted
tremblingly about and the perspiration
broke out on his brow. He was evidently
in deep and perplexing thought., and re?
mained silent. The question was re?
peated witth emphasis: "I ask, what is
your name, sir? With a mighty effort
the old Admiral jerked out tho result of
his deliberations, "The-odo-rus Bailey,"
adding impressively, "or words to that
effect."
The State Department has received,
through British sources, information
that the brig James Birney, carrying tho
American nag, while at Howe's group of
islands, in the Pacific, in September
last, was captured by the natives and
one-half the crew murdered, while the
remainder escaped in tho ship's boat.
In the list of officers and Bcamen fur?
nished it (s evident they were all British
subjects, which opinion is not only con?
firmed by the Navy Department, but the
suspicion is that ton James Birney is an
English vessel sailing under tho Ameri?
can colors, engaged in stealing the I
natives of the group of islands visitod,
and that the natives only defended them-1
selves against the intruders.
Jimmy BrOwn came running into Mr*.
Jones' house the other day, saying: "Oh,
dear, Mrs. Jones, Buch an acoident has
happened. Your son John got under a
four-horse wagon load of pig iron down
at the river, and it ran right over his
head. "Oh, dear!" Poor Mrs Jones
screamed and nearly fainted, when the
little rascal added: "Don't cry Mrs.
Jones, he wasn't hurt bit." "Why, what
' do you mean? Hun over by a four-horso
wagon load of pig iron and not hurt?"
"Well, you see, the wagon was passing
, over the bridge and he was sitting under
it fishing," replied the little rascal,
shooting out at the open door.
The marriage of Miss Ida Greeley, eld?
est daughter of the late Horaoe Oreeley,
to Nicholas Smith, of Oovington Ky.,
who served throughout the Confederate |
army, took place on Saturday morning
at the residence of the bride's aunt, Mrs.
John F. Cleveland, in New York. The1
services wore solemnized according to
the Boman Catholic form?that being
the faith of the bride's mother?by the
Eev. Father Farrell.
"Why are women so much more cour?
ageous than men?" asked a lady, the
other day, after talking of polities and
war. ?"Because it is not they who have
to fight!" he replied.
