>$? Judge Strange, of Mndmfl, has recently
been converted from Christianity to
Buddhism. Tho Judge went from Eng?
land to India, an earnest Christian, and
when not attending immediately to the
duties of his profession sought to con?
vert tho heathen Hindoos around him.
Singular to relate, his investigations of
the Hindoo religion led him to adopt
it as superior to Christianity, and he
now declares the whole substruct\iro of
the latter faith to be a humbug, tho New
Testament to bo a fraud, and the earthly
existence of Jesus himself to be doubt?
ful. It is extremely probable, however,
that the sudden stampede of the English
Judge to the Hindoo camp will not have
the effect of destroying the Christian
faith or of even shaking the confidence
of those who have made a life test of its
beneficent doctrines.
A "Wilkesbarre (Pa.) despatch speaks of
the unwillingness of the non-union
miners to go into the mines, through
fear "of the knklux, who keep a large
portion of Eastern Pennsylvania in a
state of terror. It is no wonder that
these poor fellowB are afraid when they
remember the ill-treatment the Italian
miners received at the hands of the ban?
ditti in Western Pennsylvania last fall.
Theso Italians were all driven up to?
gether and shot down in cold blood by
the members of the Coal-miners' Union,
and not one of the murderers has been
punished yet Two or three of them
were tried and acquitted this spring.
They feel perfectly secure in Pennsylva?
nia, as far an'punishment for their crimes
is concerned.
A reporter for the San Francisco Bulle?
tin has been investigating the cause of
the large bills of expenses made by the
County hospital and tiling house near
the city, ana found that for 400 patients
nt (ho hospital alone the whiskey bill
amounts to $1,100 per month, which in?
dicates that the beneficiaries of the insti?
tution, and, doubtless, the officials, take
twenty-five drinks a piece every day.
The alms house was liberally provided
with fire-water.
