Trials of a Twin.
In form and feature, face and limb
I grew so like my brother,
That folks got taking me for him,
And each for one another.
It puzzled all of our kith an kin,
It reached a fearful pitch;
For one of us was born a twin,
And not a soul knew which.
One day, to make the matter worse,
Before our names were fixed,
And we were being washed by nurse,
We got completely mixed;
And thus you sec, by fate's decree,
Or rather nurse's whim,
My brother John got christened me,
And I got christened him.
This fatal likeness ever dogged
My foot-steps when at school,
And I was always getting flogged,
When John turned out a fool.
I put this question fruitlessly
To every one I knew,
"What would you do, if you were me,
To prove that you were you?"
Our close resemblance turned the tide
Of my domestic life,
For somehow, my intended bride
Became my brother's wife.
In fact, year after year the same
Absurd mistake went on,
And when I died, tho neighbors camo
And buried brother John.
That Doy.?Who does not know that
boy? He is numerous as the sands of
the sea; he infests every neighborhood;
every square of every city in the land
has one of him. Ho is omnipresent,
and almost omnipotent for evil. Ho has
a htind in all that is bad, and knows not
that which is good. Ho it is that per
Buades tho good little boy of Sabbath
school proclivities to play truant and
"go swimmin'" with him that he may!
conio back and enjoy his discomfiture
when the parental protest and admoni?
tion is being vigorously applied. He
chftseth tho unwary cat and tieth tho tin
can to the caudal appendage of the
faniilj' watch-dog. He licth down to
learn evil and riseth up to practice it, j
and thus acquireth that wide-spread no- |
toriety which puttcth his name in the
mouth of every one. and maketh him n
terror in the land. There is no hope of
relief from his v?ickednesB, for he has
existed from the beginning and always
will. As the seasons come and go, and
the bad boy of yesterday becomes the
man of to-day, even so do others rise up
to follow in his foot-steps and perpetuate
a line we cannot hope will ever become
extinct. Let our objurgations rest on
him as we will, he yet remains to tor?
ment and distress us. He is the inevita?
ble whom we cannot avoid.
In bis speech ac ? pting the nomina?
tion for Governor of Ohio, Governor
Allen said: "He heard old, gray-headed
Democrats say to-day that they would
not be satisfied with less than 50,000 ma?
jority this fall. The ticket would be
sent before the people with the aroma of
victory about it. The ball had been set
rolling now, and victories were in store
for the Democratic party for fifty years,
and they would all live happy ami die
happy, and go to Heaven in a body."
