ELECTED BY THE EAST
Tafts Strength was in the Densely
Populated States Bryans in the
West and South
Washington Nov 5Brans chief
strength seems to have been in the
Middle West There ls a degree of
truth In the saying in vogue here last
night The East has elected a pres
ident New England New York New
Jersey and Pennsylvania rallied for
Taft with notable majorities Out
side uf the solid south Mr Bryans
main strength as was to be expected
lay In the west
Mr Bryans pluralities in Nebraska
which was carried by McKinley in
1100 and by Roosevelt in 1904 will
probably be 10000 It seems probable
that Shallenberger the fusion candi
date for governor with the remainder
of the democraticpopulist state ticket
and legislature have been elected
Mr Bryan also carried Colorado
Nevada Montana and Oklahoma
western states which except for Ok
lahoma went for Roosevelt four years
ago Oklahoma was not a state then
1
All through the west and northwest
the reports show that Mr Bryan has
made gains over the Parker vote of
1S04 In all probability his vote will
be approximately what he received in
the election of 1900 possibly greater

In my own state and in Indiana
the result was very much affected by
the local liquor business and it is
difficult to figure out just how it op

ing that the objections of Queen
Margherita will eventually be over
come preparations for the wedding
of Miss Catherine Elkins to the Duke
of the Abruzzi are now being made
Unless there is an unlooked for
change in present plans the wedding
will take place in Washington before
I January 1st
The winter hoiit of r ntor Elkins
has been decided upon in preference
to the country estate because of the
limited facilities to bo found at the
latt < r place Hotel accommodations
would prove inadequate to take care
of the numerous guests and the rail
road service is so poor that it would
be necessary to run special train
The four homes owned by the Davis
and Elkins families could accommo
date about one hundred guests but
even then there would not be room
enough for those who will receive
wedding invitations
Cipher Cablegrams Daily
Miss Elkins drove to the village and
received two cablegrams from the
duke Friday Both of thrm Were in
cipher The daily receipt of these
cablegrams indicates that the royal
suitor is keeping Miss Elkins in close
touch with his movements and of his
effort to obtain consent ror the nup
tials None of Miss Elkins friend
has any doubt that this consent
filially will be given
The prospective bride is now hap
pier than she has been since the
dukes departure for Itily This is
believed to be due to the encouraging
tenor of the daily cablegrams Visi
tors to the Elkins home say that Miss
Elkins is studying the Italian lang
uage and sings Italian melodies
Dowry to Be 1000000
As in the case of all marriages be
tween noblemen and American heir

llSI
substantial one it being rated by the
SIS
Senators intimate friends that 1
000000 in cash will be placed to the
credit of the royal explorer in some
Italian banking house on the day the
marriage takes plate The duke is
cognizant of the generous intention
of his fatherinlav tobe and it is
believed that this will prove to be his
most effective argument in eventually
inning the consent of the Queen
m oth er
A settlement of some kind would be
necessary in order that the couple
might live up to hi1 position The
dukes income is only IOU a year
Some of his exploring and scientific
expeditions were costly affairs and
they made serious inroad on his fi
nancial rcsouiccs
A significant remark made recently
by Senator Henry Gassaway Davis is
causing considerable comment The
old Senator is known to be heartily
in favor of the marriage In discuss
ing it with a prominent politician he
said If Steve ant put up th
