Investigation of the past year con

poison upon all living protoplasm in I
weak solutions Irritating it In
stronger paralyzing it and in still I
stronger destroying it Even very
weak solutions have a harmful action I
upon live processes It ranks with

Complete extermination of alco
holism is not more hopeless than the
extermination of tuberculosis cancer
or the degradation and misery of the
lower classes and work for the for
mer cause is as reasonable as are at
tempts for the amelioration of any of
the latter
The physician of the future will
be an abstainer and only a confirmed
pessimist can call so reasonable a
cause hopeless
Last summer the first German To
tal Abstinence Day was observed in
Berlin Ten different organizations
took part including the Good Tem
plars the women managers of sani
toriums pastors teachers students
merchants railway soldiery etc
Eight hundred physicians drew up an
appeal in favor of abstinence setting
forth the physical mental and moral
danger from alcohol

Florida East Coast Railway Removes
Shops from Miami to Ft Pierce
The attitude of 90 per cent of the
railroads of the land toward the use
of Intoxicants by their employees is
well known Recently the Florida
East Coast Railway Company remov
ed their shops from Miami to Ft
Pierce much to the surprise and con
sternation of many citizens of the for
mer city
There was much speculation as to
the cause and in a recent issue pf the
Miami Metropolis the leading daily
paper of that city the following ex
planation is given
The fact that the Florida East
Coast Railway Company has remov
ed the headquarters of the Southern
division of the road to Ft Pierce has
been known for several weeks and
many conjectures as to why that town
was made headquarters have been I
exploitedall merely conjectures
however
The lastest expression however is
that headquarters were established
there for the reason that Ft Pierce Is
a dry town and that better results
will be obtained by the railway com
pany for having its men awey from
temptation to visit saloons
Since going try declared the Me
tropolis Informant Ft Pierce has
been on a steady boom and I must
admit I was greatly fooled on the dry
proposition I was for wet and had
always been before that but never
again I have seen too many advan
tages of a dry town right there in Ft
Pierce to ever hold me in the wet col
umn
The gentleman also stated that peo
ple who sold their property at a sac
rifice when the county went dry cant
buy the same property today for three
times what they sold it for Blind
tigers the speaker said might be
there but if they are they are not
noticed
I believe said the gentleman al
though there is probably no way of
ever ascertaining the truth of the
matter that one of the main reasons
its
for the railway company moving
Southern headquarters to Ft Plfrt
j
n
h
was to get the men away from the
social drink
Miami voted wet a little more than
one year ago by the narrow margin of
five votes Perhaps some of her
short sighted business men will get
some light from the action of the
East Coast Railway Company
