Tin: prospect seems fair for the success of
the project to open another avenue between
the city and the Fort, which shall lie lighted
villi gas. In winter, when our neighbors
at the Fort will have occasion to visit enter
tainments in the city nearly every evening,
it will be very pleasant for them to ride home
Ik'twvcn two rows of street lamps.

From the Waibena Tlcporter.
A ftcr a thorough trial for the pt ten
yesir, in all the different soils here, the peo
ple of this vicinity liave concluded that they
live in a grape growing country. In nearly
every lot in Wathcna can be seen evidence
of thatlxilief, in the sliape of caix-fully ten
ded grape vines. Several of the farniem
1 if this Township have Very respectable vine-ya;-il-.;
but the Only man in this section who
makes the raising of grapes a ecialiiy is
Mr. Constant Poirier. lie was born and
p iwd his earl' manhood amid the ine
clad hills of Southern. France, and there
trained tint practical knowledge of the treat
ment of the grape that has lieen one of the
I't.tny caurcs of his success in his vineyard
iiercl Mr. Poirier tells us that he believes
the 5.1:! ar.d climate of ICorthem Kansas are
preS rabl to thoc of Southern France for
grap. ia:ing.
Mr. Poirier is the pinecr venyardist of
tins action, liaving planted the hrst grajie
i.ti i.i Northwest Missouri In 1S.S he
111 rvc J to Kansas, and pre-empted the land
he iwf owns. The next cpring he put out
-i-ie v'irawba and Isabellas, in ground that
ra- un ultivated and scarcely cleared. The
vines- if put out then arc now full of grapes,
aivl t,ir. promise of many years of fniitful
iiCfi. i-'rom that beginning he has now
m iclo . ir himself the largest vinevard in
K :3, md embracing over twenty different
vtu'ict e, among which are the two above
na:ndand the Concord, (which Mr. P. re
g:ird a the most profitable grape nused in
thh section), Delaware, GUra, Elsingburg.
Burgundy, Taylor, Bullet, Diana, Jona,
Gi;, Virginia Seedling, Muscodine, Clin
ton, Ive's Seedling, (next to the Concord in
value), Hartford Prolific, Union Village,
Creveling, Allen, Hybrid, and others. Mr.
Poirier has now twenty-two acres of grapes
on l.Ls premises, about half of which are in
bearing order. He expects to pick about
forty tons. At present he is Felling them in
Wa'thena, and St. Joseph, and shipping to
Atchison anp Leavenworth, in this State,
and Omaha, Xebraake. About nine-tenths
of all the grapes picked are made into wine,
as he thinks it better to raise for that purpose
than to sell them at ten cents a pound. This
year the crop is unusually large, and free
from rot.
Tiiis season, for the first time, birds but
little larger than sparrows have visited the
viuy:.nis in this vicinity, and lave already
done considerable damage by their picking
the ripegrapes. The birds arc of dull y el
lowrh color, breasts brighter in the male
bird than the female; brown wings and
back, with vellowish tail. They liave a
.sharp bill, about three-fourths of an inch in
length, which they inaert in the grape.'
Such grapes shrivel and dry up, and in a
day or two become worthless.
Mr. Poirier proposes to still go on setting
out vines on even a larger scale than before.
He has excellent fadlkicB for making wine,
and he thinks that trade will prove quite lu
crative Although Mr. P. makes grape-
growing a speciality, yet he has a very large
assortment of other fruits. His peach or
chard is in full bearing, and many of the
-mailer fruits 00 his priauscs. He is build
ing a fish-pond, near his residence, with an
artificial Island in the centre, to be connected
with the outer banks by a bridge. On the
island Ls a tasty summer-house. When
these improvements arc completed it will be
a very attractive place. We regard this vin
yard as one of the institutions of this place,
worthy of note, and the acres of fruitful
vines," on hillsides which ten or twelve years
ago were covered with some heavy timber
and a dense underbrush, is proof of the en
ergy of the proprietor.
