The Leavenworth coal falls but seven icr

In other respects does our coal resemble the

On Monday .night tbc first column of the
Channel Pier was brought lo its. final resting
place, and to-day it is being scaled up with
cement masonry. As soon as this has Iiatl
time to "set" the air pressure will be re
moved and the work of filling lie carried on
in the open air. The pneumatic machinery
will then lie available for at once starting the
second column. . 1
i.i .
Tlic linking tof this column has Iiecn a
complete huccojs.- It is crfeetly vertical,
and in exact position, ami has liecn carried
down about twelve (12) feet into the solid
rock. Tlic two remaining columns (a pier
is composed of Jhrcc coIihiiih) will be sunk
to at least the Kline depth into the rock, ami
then the three will be firmly braced and tied
together. All this work will go mi rapidly
hereafter, as'thc problem has now Uvn
solved of handling these heavy columns .in
the channel, and of securing tein firmly in
the solid rock to any rcouircd depth.
TiiKtiE was very little complaint over the
awards at the Fair, nearly everyltmly being
erfectly satisfied. The officers of the As

discharged their duties in a straight forward
and nnpreiiidicial manner, ami in fining so
accomplished much towards the success of
future exhibitions.

The rent Srwia Machine t'onlrHt.
One of tlic most interesting, exciting and
important trials for superiority between sew
ing machines, which it has been our privi
lege to witness, terminated with the grand
exhibition at the Maryland Institute, intlii?
city, on Wednesday evening last, 10th inst,,
after a contest ot over, four weeks duration,
the "Weed," however, was the only one that
succeeded in stitching upon everything, from
thirty thicknesses of muslin to the finest lace,
through leather imd boards of nearly one
(iiiarterof an inch in thickness, thus demon
strating beyond dispute the power of the un
erring ftranjht needle, and its anility to rea-t
without derangement, the coarser, heavier
grades; while, from heavy glazed cotton ami
linen thread, it asseil immediately to No.
200 cotton, with thesamc needle ami tension,
in the same machine exhibiting a most
miraculous nicety of adjustment tion Mime
of the frailest falrics that we ever saw exe
cuted ujion a sewing machine.
The committee were an able, discreet ami
impirtial body of ladies and gentlemen,
whom 110 fear or favor could inlliience, antl
who were nuknowii lo all the contestants
until the final day of trial. The result anil
awards wereas follows: "To the WeetlSew-
iug-Machine, a gotd mctlal; to the Wheeler
and Wilson, a silver mctlal; to the Howe
