THE DEMOCRATIC NORTHWEST, THURSDAY MAY 12,1681. 1 Soatlttrirr's Flying Machine. Ckariott Obtam.) It is now learned that Dr. Daniel Asbury'8 flying machine will be given its finishing touches within one week. For two years Dr. Asbury with the aid of a skilled mechanic, has been en gaged in perfecting his idea. So far as can be gathered from the descrip tion of those who have enjoyed the privilege of viewing its construction, about the following idea is given of it: The inventor reverts to first principles for its basis. Naturo furnishes the mode!, and the birds of the air are robbed of tho secret of their motive power for iu purpose. The body of " the invention is in shape something be tween a boat and the body of a bird. The wings are made of canvas and constructed in imitation of a bird's wings. ' They measure thirtyfeetfrom tip to tip. They are made to operate, not by working the arms, as is sup posed, but by ingenious- machinery to which a pedal is attached, and which is worxea oy tne loot like a sewing machine. This is only used when it is desired to ascend. As soon as a proper altitude is reached tho flapping of the wings is dispensed with, and the wings being extended on a level, the bird machine, with the aid of propellers on the sides, sails through the air any dis tance desired. The machine is nicely balanced, and if it is- desired to de scend, all that is necessary is to throw a little extra weight forward to give the beak the right incline downward and the object is attained. Dr. As bury s reputation as an inventor is established by his method of curing tobacco, extensively in uso In this State and in Virginia, and leads to 0 ; . test idea may be a suc cess. An Ohio farmer sends to the Prudi- ral Farmer an account of the products of an acre lot of which he says: '1 nave cropped lor several years- as a truck patch, planting it in potatoes, sweet corn, and vegetables, until it be came foul with weeds, particularly those meanest of pests, button weed red root and foxtail grass. It was be coming so foul I could get only half of a crop; so I determined to eradicate the pests. In the Spring of 1879 I plowed the croud and sowed, it in oats, and at harvest cut and threshed eighty bushels of !No. 1 oats, for the beginning Then again I plowed and sowed it-, in buckwheat, and from this planting threshed eighteen bushels of fine buck wheat. A third time I plowed it about the middle of October.and sowed . it in wheat, and cut and threshed f rorri this third planting -twenty'-Sve-bushels of No. 1 wheat this season. But this is not all. I sowed this same" acre in clover last Spring, the first week in March, and by the middle of August jCut t,wp and one-half tons of Gee clover hay. All these crops within sixteen months, or one crop for every four months. . But Still the ground -is not exhausted, for at the present writing there is a fine crop of pasture, six inch es high.' . A child of three years 'of ago with a book in its infant hands, is a fearful sight. It is too often the death warrant, such as the condemned stupidity looks at fatal, yet beyond' his comprehension What should a child three years old- nay, five or six years old be taught? Strong meats for weak digestions make not bodily strength. Let there be nur sery tales and nursery rhymes. I would say to every parent, especially to every mother, sing to your children, tell them pleasant stories; if in the country, be not to careful lest they get a little dirt upon their hands and clothes; earth is very akin to us all, in children's out-of-door plays, soil them not inwardly. There is in ifa kind of consanguinity between all creatures; by it we touch upon tho com mon sympathy of our first substance, and beget a kindness fo'r our poor relations, . the brutes.' Let children have a free, open-air sport, and fear not though they make acquaintance with the pigs, the donkeys and chickens they may form worse friendship with wiser looking ones; encourage a familiarity with all that love to court them; dum animals ' love children, and children love them. There is a language among them which the world's . language obliterate in the elders. It is o moro importance that you should make yur children loving, than that you should make them wise. Above all-things, if you become old and . poor, these will be "better than friends that will never neglect you. Children breught up lovingly at your knees will never shut- their doors upon you, and point were they would have you go. Gently Does It. Eugene Cross, Swan Street, Buffalo, writes: I have used Snrinsr Blossom for Dyspepsia and Indigestion, and have found it to act admirably ns a gentle Aperient and Blood Purifier. I consider it unequaled; "you are at liberty to use .my name as a reference. Price, 50 cents, trial bottles 10 cents. Teachers in cities and in "villages hav ing not less than 2,500 inhabitants may have their certificates renewed without re-examination, if they have the qualifie cations above mentioned,- But country school-teachers seem to be entirely cut off from the benefits of the law. They are. the ones who have the hardest time. In out-of-the-way counties they ; must , often travel a distance of fifteen to twenty-five miles by private conveyance to be examined. Why should country teach ers be discriminated against? As it is already, the energetic and ambitious country pedagogue generally succeeds in getting into city schools, leaving country districts bare of the best teachers. Why should Ohio legislators try to make country school-teaching still more dis tasteful? It passes human understanding to tell why a Legislature can never do a good thing out-and-out while they are about it. Cifl. Com. NEW BOOM! XD New . Goods ! NEW SPRING 00! Spring and Summer.
