An illustration of this saying is found in the fact that one of the members of Co. F. and one of Henry county's fair daughters were to have been married this week. Grim visaged war has parted the couple for a time at least, and the happy event which was to have made them one had to be postponed. A new State law was passed March 5th of this year which has for its ob ject a better collection of delinquent personal taxes. Something of this kind has long been needed. Little is known outside the treasurer's office of the schemes to avoid the payment oi personal taxes. The new law pro vides that the county commissioners shall at their September session an nually cause the persons delinquent in the payment of personal property to be publicly read, and they may at any time, if they deem the same nec essary, authorize the treasurer to em ploy collectors to collect the same or any part thereof, prescribing the compensation of such collectors, to be paid but of the county treasury. Mr. Lead ers is one of the oldest subscribers unon our books, and is a remarkably spry man for one of his advanced age. He informs us that on the morning of his last birthday he arose at 8 o'clock and went to work; also, that last week he and his better-half drove to Pauld ing county, on a visit to his daughter and family, who are living on a farm and doing well in that county. The city fathers held 'a meeting Monday evening, with entire mem bership present, except Clerk Rey nolds. An ordinance establishing a board of waterworks trustees was in troduced and passed, as was a reso lution authorizing the Mayor and Clerk to advertise the waterworks and electric light bonds for sale ac cording to statute. Geo. Pardee asked for an abatement of certain sewer tax, and the matter was re ferred to the sewer committee for in vestigation. An ordinance granting a franchise to the Central Union Tele phone exchange in the city, was read for the first time and passed until next regular meeting.
