"CAN YOU REACH THEM PERTATORS?"
TOES r
Many of your readers have no doubt
' read the following i icb anecdote. It is old,
but is like good wine, it will bear repetitions-
Those who have never had a '-read

the .obUv-ion into which it was fast falling
Several gentlemen of the Massachusetts
Legislature, dining at a Boston Hotel, one
of them asked Mr. M., a gentleman who
sat opposite
"Can you reach the pertatort, sir?"
Mr. M., extending his arms towards the
dish and satisfied himself that he could
reach- the "pertators," and answered
Yes sir."
The legislator was taken aback with
the unexpected rebuff from the wag ; but
presently recoveiing himself, he asked
" Will you stick my f irk into one of
em-then?" -
Mr. M. took the firk and very coolly
plunged it into a finely cooked potato, and
left it titert! The compsny reared, as t!,ey
took' the joke, and the victim looked more
foolish than before ; but suddenly an id) a
struck him, and rising to his feet, he ex.
claimed, with an air of conscious triumph
"Xqv, Mr. M , I will trouble you for

Mr.M. rose to his feet, and with ih
most imperturbable gravity, pulled the

The Faculty Lst year was composed
of the follow ing gciifb-mt n : Professors
Dascomb, Towr.shend, Newbfliry and
Fairchiid. The very able course of ltc
turrs delivered last v. inter, and listened
to by a class of studtiits w ho testified
with enthusiasm to their great excellence,
render any comnx -ndation of the corps of
teachers, as then constituted, eutindv su
perfluous. This year the Faculty will
be the same with .the fullowi::" excen
lions: . Prof. Nf-w berry has accejited an
appointment from the National Govern
mint in connec'ion vt ith the Coast Sunn y
cf California. lie uiil not, of course, be
amotig thelectuiers of the coming season'.
We hae the pleasure, however, ol an
nouncing the nanus of Prof. J. P. Kirt

bers of the Faculty. These gentlemen,
both res'dents of Cleveland, will add
greatly to the stnug: h of the corps of
teachers, who without them were a b idv
of strong and accomplished men.
Prof. Kirthm l, now enjoying a gren
old age of undiminished pow er, has spem
a long life in the successful pursuit of
vaiious departments of natural science, in
connection with the pr.iclice of medicine,
in which he has won a wide and solid
reputation. Willi a shrewdness and tact
which puts one i-i mind of his Yankee ori
gin and training, he reduces his knowl
edge at onee to available forms. lie
unites, and it is commonly deemed a rare
combination, thorough ssii-nce with equal
ly thorough practical tendencies and prac
tical power. He never seems to regard
his work as done, till he has laid science
under heavy contril uiions t the im
provement of the commonest processes in
fanning and gardening. This remaik
will bd abundantly verified by all who
are familiar with his history and w ith the
impulse w hich hisi.vimple and counsel
have given to re;;l agricultural and horti
culiural. His ace, ptauce of his n ccut
appointment wiil secure to the students
of the College t.;e results t f u kiiid of
knowledge and experience w hose richness
will be highly valued as they advance in
life.
Prof. St. John comes to his wjik as
Professor cf the Ohio Agricultural Col
lege, in the prime of life, and with ante
cedents that many men would deem
enough to ke p their laurels green tor a
whole life. An honored graduate of
Yale, not only from her Colk-ge, but also
from her Law and Medical schools he
afterwards pel:t two years in Europe in
the prosecution of his studie s ; ho w as a
member of the Faculty at Vale for some
time, and was afterwards appointed Pro
fessor of Chemistry at Western Reserve
College. Since that time he has made
his own mark as a man of science at the
wet.t. In his connection with Western
Reserve" College ,' and with the Medical
College at Cleveland, he has secured a
high place in tin; esteem of a wide circle
of young genllem "ii v. ho w ill cherish a
life-long remembrance of the fullness of
knowledge and -if the warm enihusidsin
