THE CHRONICLE.
A SON SHOOTS AND KILLS HIS
FATHER.
A terrible traxedy occurred in New
York city, oa the morn in? of Tues
day, June 3d. Frank H. Walworth,
aged nineteen, ebot and killed his fa
ther. Mansfield T. Walworth, in the
Sturtevant House. Domestio trouble
is assigned as the cause of the trage
dy. Young Walworth, who Uvea at
Saratoga, directly after the shooting,
went to the Twenty-ninth Precinct
police station and surrendered.
He tells the following story con
cerning the Bbootlng, and the causes
which led thereto: - -
I reside with my mother In Sarato
ga, my father having parted from her
some years ago. My lather is an au
thor, and I have been studying law.
I think my father is about foriy-one
years old, bit do not know where he
was born. Mr father baa not iived
with my mother Blnce we left bere
three years ago, but he has repeatedly
sent us threatening and insulting let
ters. It is only a short time since he
threatened to shoot my mother and
myself. I shot bim because of this.
Not long ago I met him in the street
in Saratoga, and I thca told him that
if he did not keep away from ns or in
sulted my mother any more 1 would
shoot him. I told him that there

punity, and especially when mother
was being intuited. I went to his
bouse yesterday and left a ; Dote for
bim to call on me, which he did this
morning. When he came in the room
I drew out a revolver and told him to
promise me that he would not threat-

Judge Barbour to know this, as he
was interested in tne case oeiore.
Dr. Marsh did not find any pistol in
the pockets of the deceased, but found
the note left for bim by bis son in his
breast pocget. iue luiiuwiug
copy of the note:
I want to try and settle some fam
ily matters. Call at the Sturtevant
Bouse after an hour or two. If I am
not there I will leave word at the of
fice. F. H. Wax worth."
At the time of his death Walworth
was publishing a Eerial story in the
New York Weekly, and had another
novel in press. Chief Justice Bar
bour of the Superior Court, on hear
ing of the death of Walwarth ad
journed the court he was holding,
the deceased being his nephew, and
alsoeonofthe late Chancellor Wal
worth. .
The Tribune furnishes the follow
ing: Mrs. Walwoith. a little more
than three years ago, instituted pro
f ceediugs for divorce and eventually
' obtained a bill of separation, on the
ground of cruel treatment on the part
oiher husband. She received the
sympathy and support of the relatives
ofhersell and husband and all who
were conversant with the facts in the
rase. Since her separation from him
Walworth bas annoyed her in va
rietal ways, principally by writing her
abusive letters and occasionally
threatening her life. He bas also re
flected upon her character, it ia said,
in an indirect way, in one of his
works of fiction. Mrs. Walworth was
daughter of General Hardin of Illi
nois, a military man of prominence
in the Mexican war, he having espec
ially distinguished himself at . Buena
Vista. ' ,
Frank Walworth, on a commit
ment made out by the coroner, was
removed to the tombs. Mrs. Wal
worth telegraphed to ex-Judge Beach:
"See my son, Frank H. Walworth, at
once, and attend to bis case."- Beach
subsequently had a consultation with
his client.
Mansfield T. Walworth was a son
of the hue Chancellor Walworth, the
well-known jurist, and a brother of
Father Walworth, a Romish priest of
some reputation as a revivalist. Mr.
Walworth was a writer of novels, but
never had Mich a reputation as to
make him known to the literary
world. 1 - - - '

THE CHRONICLE
It Is aaid that the Shoshone Indiana
in Nevada, are preparing to go out on
a big hunt for white scalps.
The Pope of Rome, whose health has
keen very feeble for several weeks, ia
reported improving.
Fifty-nine liyes were lost by the
Drummond, Nova Scotia, colliery disas
ter. It made 39 widows and Si -father
less children.
"Wouldn't you call this a calf of
the leir ?" asked John, pointing to
his nether limbs. "No," replied Pat,
"I should say it was the leg of a calf."
The Ashtabula Sentinel ays that
E. 8. Gleason, of Lenox, cut a white
ash treee recently which made 3664
feet oriumber, 3300 feet sold iorb.
Marshal MacMahon was electedPres
identof the Republic of France on the
25th Inst, vice M. Thiers, resigned. The
ministers composing tbe Cabinet of the
lata President have also resigned, and a
new one will be formed at once. This
event caused intense excitement in Par
is but no disturbances have occurred.
Why is it that some of our "relig
ious" newspapers will not restrain
the Rushing fervor of certain corres
pondents? Here from one of them ia
the description of a Bishop's sermon :
"In his address the lips of the prelate
seemed touched with nre, the clerey
around the holy place infused with
light ; and the about-to-be recipient
of the priesthood sat before his spirit
ual lather in the meekness of a child
The large congregation present seem
ed spiritualized as the quick flashes
or holy thought pianced lor in in
words from the mouth of tbe speak
er." Pray, wasn't that congregation
in some danger of the fate of Semele ?
Again, in an account of a missionary
preacher at the West, it is said : "To
see one of these audiences would be a
curious sight, some sitting, some ly
ing full length in their bunks, on all
sides, and even behind the preacher's
ba:k, with only their heads project
ing ; and these they would sometimes
pull in when a heavy storm of denun
ciation of their particular sins was
launched at them, and put them out
again when the storm had passed
over. So the gentle violet meekly
bends its head in early Spring until
the chilling gust passes over." To
this we have nothing of comment to
add. The violet is too much for us.

Is widely known

HJU&C, years, with a con-
u-oer stantly growing
reputation, based on its intrinsic virtues,
and sustained by its remarkable cures.
So mild as to be safe and beneScial to
children, and yet so searching as to
effectually pute out the great corrup
tions of the blood, such as the scrof
ulous and syphilitic contamination.
Impurities or diseases that have lurked
in the system for years soon yield to
this powerful antidote, and disappear.
Hence its wonderful cures, many of
which are publicly known, of Scrofula,
and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers,
Eruptions and eruptive disorders of
the skin. Tumors, Blotches, Boils,
Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St.
Anthony's Fire, Kose or Ery
sipelas, Tetter. Salt Klieuru,
Scald Head. liing"worm. and in
ternal Ulcerations of the Uterus,
Stomach, and Liver. It also cures
other complaints, to which it would not
seem especially adapted, such as Drop
sy, Dyspepsia, Fits, Jfeuralsria,
lieart Disease, Female Weak
ness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea,
when they are manifestations of the
scrofulous poisons.
It is an excellent restorer of health
and strength in the Spring. By renew
ing tlie appetite and vigor of the diges
tive ortrnns, it dissipates the depression
and listless languor of the season.
Even where no disorder appears, people
feel better, and live longer, for cleansing
the blood. The system moves cn with
renewed vigor and a new lease of life.
