HUMOR.
DECIDEDLY RICH.
The following i from the lMitor's Table, of
the Knirkerboc'.tr, and savors strongly of the
retl, 'ginooine' wit ol 'Old Knick."
In my native town of M , in the year
18 ., could be ieeii, two afternoon of each i
week, a large collection of devoted ladies du- I
Jy organized into a 'Sew ing Circle.' Among j
the 'sewers that went forth to sew' on thcec .
occasions, waa a maiden lady of about 4U I
by name, Desire Ayres, Slio was an invet
erate snuff-taker, and her nasal twnng was
not particularly agreeable to anybody; and
he was sometimes, to the inconsiderate, the
subject of practical joUcs.
By the aid of the 'Circle,' five promising
young men were enabled to graduate from
University, and expected to enter the
ministry. But to the great indignation of
Desire and others, one lik.il a 'call' from u
charming young widow to take charge of a
plantation, which of course lie accepted.
Another had ' call' to quack medicines; an
other to school teaching, although he soon
arrived to great distinction as a horse jot key ;
and David Jones, Esq. can 'post you up' as
to the fourth. The last, Mr. V , a blun
dering, near-sighted, absent-minded mnn,
graduated at the Thcologiciil Seminary, and
went as a missionary to an island in tlio Pa
cific. After tw enty years' absence, ho re
turned If Visit the scenes of his boyhood, and
to look upon the laces ol those who had so
kindly assisted him. The joy of the 'old
folks at home' knew no bounds. The young
people caught the excitement. A scorn ol
old women followed him wherever ho went,
and compelled him to pnss but a single night
under the same roof. They lived over again
the scenes of the 'Sewing Circle.' The bi
ography of those striped pantaloons was re
peated. Every evening, for many weeks
Mr. V held 'meetings' ut the dill'orenl
houses, where he repeated, again mi l ugain
the story of the thousand conversion, ovoi
which the de'ighted illagers cncklcd lik(
pullets over their first egg; and each old la
dy that had set a stitch lor the 'Circle,' tool
lull credit for every conversion, reserving bu
a small share for the missionary.
No one followed up Ike meeting! more con
slant ly than a little old woman with u wizlei
up face, of the shape and color of a coco
nut. Her head was deposited in the cxtiem
corner of a huge, tlaring bonnet, of a fllhioi
that had outrun the memory of man. Till
was the veritable Desire Ayres. Nor had th
new growth of boys Mated to tease her.
To-night there is u meeting at Deacon ft
It is November, and the house i crowdei
Mr. r stands in the doorway, where th
'keeping-room' opens into the kitchen. Th
village aristocracy is in one, and (be boy
and servant in the other. In the kitche
a fire-place 'as ij a place,' in which half th
village might aaaeiuulj urn! gossip. Th
scrt'ices have commenced. All i huahft
And now Desire marches in, and brushing
small boy off his chair, takes it, anil seats hoi
self before the huge lire-place. The boy
look at each other and laugh. They believ
more in Deal re than in V . They pi 1
the wood on the lire, mid are pleated to He
her move back, Bl the heat increases beyon
her endurance And now some cheiinui
wood begins to 'snap,' and Desire again putt
ed open the cellar door, mid down she goei
. f,Jjr. ull, to the bottom of the stair.-
Mr. p , apparently half asleep, walk
calmly to the cellar door, ami look down li
to the darkness, without offering to asis
or to let toy one puss by him to her relief!
In a moment l)es;re comes trudging u
stnirs, drugging her chair behind her, hi
bonnet terribly distorted. She goes to hi
first positiuii, und raising her ( hair as hij
aa she conveniently can, brings it to tl
floor with n whack: and then sits down, nil
attempts to get her bonnet 'into conditio;
until the meeting is over.
On the following Babbtth Mr. 1'
preached, a a' mutter of course. The tisii
requests for 'prayers for the ufllieted' wei
read; and among the rest, one handed to M

ran a follows:

'Here Mr. 1' paused, and eyed the nol
for a minute or mure. Whether tho writir
was bad, or he disliked the sentiment, is n
new known; but he placed thn note by h
side, and still kept hia eye on it. The lai
two lines, however, he did not read, whic
were aa lollows:
