THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 1888.
What's the matter
It's all bight.
with the corn?
Fay Templeton, one of Abilene's
foot-light favorites, after some years of
married life .will, it is said, return to
the stage.
John Chronister had a cow killed by
lightning during the storm of Saturday
night. This lightning record is getting
rather monotonous.
During the storm Saturday night,
Samuel Bricker, north-east of the city,
lost three -fine horse3 which were
killed by the lightning.
Uncle Jack Markley rejoices over the
arrival of a new daughter at his house
yesterday. All doing well. The only
thing that worries the happy father is
that the little lady is a pronounced .Re
publican in politics.
. .
The stone residence of E.Z. Butcher,
in Lincoln township, had the corner
completely knocked out by lightning
last night. Members of the family
were sleeping within a few feet of the
break but were not hurt.
II. Stott. of Newbern, was the victim
of a runaway Saturday afternoon. The
diminutive mules that lie drives made,
for a wonder, some quick moves and
overturned the wagon, throwing him
out and slightly crippling the gentle
man. We acknowledge the receipt of invi
tations to attend the third annual meet
ing of the Hope Fair Association, Sept.
4lh, 5th, 6th and 7th. The meeting
promises to be one of the best in cen
tral Kansas, and one of which Dickin
son county may well be proud. Its
success will largely be due to the untir
ing efforts of the secretary, A. M. Cra
ry, who is putting in a good deal of .
personal effort for the Association.

John West, of this city, is in hiB81st
year and is an Englishman by birth.
He has been in America fifty-seven
years and voted for Henry 'Clay and
every Whig candidate until the Repub
lican party was organized, since which
time he has voted for every Republican
candidate for President. He says that
he voted for Harrison and Tyler, and
hopes to live so as to be able to vote
for Ben Harrison, and will do so
whether it hurts the mother country
or not.

Resolutions of Eespect.
Headquarters Abilene Post, 2fo. 63. G.
A. R., Department of Kansas, July
27th, 1888.
At a regular meeting of Abilene
Post No. 63, the following resolutions
were adopted:
WriEREAS, The members of Abilene
Post, Xo. 63, are again called upon to
mourn the loss of a true and faithful
comrade, now therefore be it
Resolved, That in the death of our
esteemed comrade, Hector Myers, the
Post has lost a worthy member, his
family a kind and affectionate husband
and father.
Resolved, That we as members of
this Post deeply mourn his loss and
with grateful remembrance of his fam
ily and friends condole with them in
this sad bereavement and sorrowful
affliction.
Resolved, That a copy of these reso
lutions be sent to the widow of our
comrade and a copy furnished for pub
lication. W. T. Davidson.

ALMOST FATAL.
1 . Campbell, of BTewbern, Re
ceives a Severe Shock of Electricity.
Along with the damage done by
Saturday night's storm was the shock
ing of L. B. Campbell, a farmer of
Newbern township, by the electricity
which accompanied the rain and wind.
Mr. Campbell was awakened by the
rumble of thunder and went to the
north window of his room to lower the
window. As he stood in the draft of
air and placed hi hand upon the window-catch,
he received a stroke of elec
tricity which for the time knocked him
senseless. The fluid burned its Tvay
down his arm to the breast and scarred
the body fearfully. The window
lights were shattered and the particles
of broken glass striking the gentleman
upon the bead and face cut the skin
badly.
Mr. C. suffered severely yesterday
but is resting easier now and will re
cover. It was a narrow escape from
death and emphasizes the oft-repeated
advice to keep away from open win
dows or doors during a thunder storm,
as there seems to- be more danger in
being in a draft of air than anywhere
else.

COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING.
Work on the Structure at Chapman
Going Forward Rapidly.
The Courier last week has an exten
sive, write-up of the county high school
building now in course of erection at
Chapman. From its account we clip
the following:
'The walls of the basement and first
story are now completed and the second
story will soon loom up in brilliant
spendor. The main building being
57x59 feet in size gives assurance that
300 students may be easily accommo
dated. The basement consists of a
spocious hall and three rooms, one of
which, with a little additional expense,
may be subdivided and transformed
into the pleasantest kind of dwelling
apartments. On the first floor there
will be an office, two recitation rooms
and a commodious study. A spacious
hall also adds much to the style and
convenience of this first story. The
design of the upper story is, two reci
tation rooms, a large library, and a
large assembly room which will likelj
prove to be the largest room in the
county, with but several possible
exceptions. The workmanship thus
far displayed bids fair to make this
structure a source of pride to the town
and a credit to the progressive county
which has been the first to take advan
tage of the statutes authorizing high
schools. Additional appropriations
have recently been made by the county
high school board, which, when applied,
will make about $20,000 which have
been expended on the building and
grounds. The contract calls for the
completion of the building by the first
of next March. The board have made
frequent visits to this place and always
express themselves as highly pleased
with the appearance of the work and
quality of the material. The building
will be opened to the public on or about
the first of September, when, under the
management of a competent principal,
the institution may be made to com
pete with any high school in the State.
Three courses of instruction will be ar
ranged: a normal, a scientific and a
teacher's course. Many families are
already preparing to take advantage
of the school, and many more will prob
ably move here before it opens. It be
hooves the whole county to combine
for the success of the county high
school. Teachers, parents, guaidians
and pupils alike may do much to place
this coming institution in great promi
nence throughout the county and Cen
tral Kansas."
