First Cleveland was British and now
he is anti-British. Does anybody know
what side he is on anyhow?
Now we say to the bewildered Dem
ocracy of Dickinson county, the cam
paign is wide open! Bring on your
bears.
Once Cleveland was a mascot be
cause of the public's ignorance of him;
now lie is a hoo-doo because of the pub
lic's knowledge of him.
Too bad the Democrats can't add
Utah to their list of sure States. The
Mormon organ, the Salt Lake Ilerald,
is solid for Cleveland, polygamy and
leform.
Four years ago under Republican ad
ministration we bad an efficient mail
service; now our postoffices, because
inadequately officered, dump mail mat
ter into bays or bum it up.
Even Patrick Ford will come out in
the Irish World this week in support of
President Cleveland. Topeka Demo
crat. Again we rise to remark. Wratz!
The Democrats were going to reduce
the expenses of the government if they
could gain control of the government.
The records show that there was never
so reckless a waste of money and that
the expenditures have increased.
The Salina Herald has a double head
to an editorial which is rather sugges
tive. It is as follows: '-The Worst of
Humbugs. Allen G. Thurman's speech
at Toledo." Of course it means all
right but we are inclined to think the
editor "builded better than he knew."
The Democrats now claim that they
are not for free trade. The history of
their party is more truthful than their
claim. In the 1S48 platform they con
gratulate themselves "on the noble im
pulse given to the cause of free trade
by the repeal of the tariff of 1842."
on
Candidate Fisk worked it sharp
the Methodist church in making
that organization furnish him a million
copies of campaign documents in the
shape of a memorial which he drew up
at the last general conference. He and
Brother Botkin seem to have the Aletb
odists pretty well under their thumbs
A letter received from Louisiana by
a resident in the South now in Chicago
contains this paragraph:
"The negro vote is the most exciting
question discussed in the South. Col
ored men are daily killed or driven from
their homes for voting their sentiments
at the county elections, so that much
wrong-doing and wickedness is looked
for at the coming election in November."
The Kansas Methodist Chautauqua
says: Let our whisky neighbors an
swer the followiLg questions, based up
on these accompanying facts: Texas,
with 100,000 less population than Kan
sas, has 3,000 convicts to Kansas 999.
How can you account for the odds in
favor of Kansas? How much do you
think legal prohibition has to do with
it?
Four years ago a Union soldier could
vote for Cleveland without sacrificing
his self-respect, because the man's sen
timents were unknown; now what
soldier so base as to vote for a man who
selects deserving applicants for pen
sions as objects of mockery; who goes
fishing on Decoration Day, and whose
sycophantic instincts led him to make
the order restoring to the ex-Confederates
the battle flags captured during
the war?
A letter from a leading citizen of
Herkimer county, New York, a gentle
man who has taken an active part in
Empire State politics for a score of
years says: "The Republican candidates
will be successful and the Empire State
will give her vote for Harrison and
' Morton. In all the factories here the
voters are changing that way to reap
uio ltcuculo ui piuicuuun." xne gen
tleman lives in the center of the manu-
factoring region of New York and his
words are indicative of the direction of
we political current.
The County Ticket.
The Republicans of Dickinson county
have, in a harmonious and enthusiastic
convention, placed before the people a
ticket that cannot help but win respect
and favor. There is not a man on the
ticket but who can be heartily and con
scientiously supported by the party.
Every candidate, without exception,
deserves the confidence and support of
his fellow Republicans and will get it
too.
As Mr. Robinson said in the conven
tion Saturday, while some parts of the
county would have liked exceedingly
well to have seen their man win, still
now they will shake hands and go in
with a will to pile up a big majority for
the Republican nominees. The gentle
men who were competitors with the
fortunate nominees have the sympathy
of their hundreds of friends over the
defeat; but all could not gain the race,
and as the contest was from beginning
to end a straightforward good-natured
one those who were beaten can and
will work for the success of the ticket.
Of the gentlemen nominated only a
brief sketch can here be given:
COUNTY ATTORNEYrl3JB',,'
C. C. Bitting, the next county attor
ney of Dickinson county, is a rising
young lawyer of the county capital.
He is a graduate of one of the best law
schools that the east affords and has
worked his way up in the profession
with never a downward step. His
practice here in Abilene, where for sev
eral years he has been located, has in
creased flatteringly and he is looked
a as an eminently safe advisor in
legal matters. He is, moreover, a good
orator, being in demand all through
the county when a political meeting is
in progress. Affable, genial and atten
tive to duty, he will make an able offi
cial and one faithful to the trust im
posed in him.
PKOBATE JUDGE.
B. W. Peck, the nominee for this
important position, has been for years
a leader in the politics of South Dick
inson. A farmer, increasing his earn
ings by teaching school winters, he has
made his influence felt through a wide
neighborhood. He has always been a
staunch supporter of Republicanism
and Republican principles and is known
throughout the county as the "Repub
lican war-horse of Jefferson township."
Mr. Peck is yet a young man to have
so high an honor as the probate judge
ship conferred upon him but he is well
qualified both by education and natural
ability for the position and will have
no difficulty in snowing under his op
ponent by a handsome majority.
DISTRICT CLERK.
No worthier a man than W. S. An
derson could have been selected for this
position. His whole life has been one
of devotion to his country and it is fit
that he should have adequate recogni
tion. During the war he fought nobly
that the Union might be preserved. In
that struggle he received wounds that
have entitled him to the Nation's boun
ty ever since. For two terms as Coun
ty Surveyor he proved his capability to
fill a public office acceptably and now
that he is about to begin another
important trust, he will be found still
faithful and competant. Mr. A. is an
upright, earnest christian gentleman,
against whom not a word can be spoken.
He will be elected triumphantly.
COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT.
It is not saying too much to state
that J. S, Fcrdmore than deserved the
hearty and unanimous renomination
accorded hun. He has-proven himself
the right man in the right place during
the past two years. Never have the
schools of the county been in a more
prosperous condition or the public gen
erally so well satisfied with the school
work as at present. Mr. Ford has a
happy faculty of making friends every
where and while he is to the patrons a
wise governor and overseer he is to the
teachers a fnend, counselor and ad
visor. He will receive his re-election
by the largest majority ever known in
Dickinson county; as we have said be
fore. , we doubt if there is a man who
will take the chances of certain defeat
by running against him.
REPRESENTATIVES.
The 6Sth district will be represented
this winter by the polished orator, able
lawyer and accomplished legislator,
Hon. J. R. Burton. Not only is his
fame as broad and wide as Kansas but
he is known even to the Atlantic coast,
having been one of three men selected
from the Sunflower State to assist in
the Maine campaign. His influence is
shown by the fact that Abilene is the
only place in the "West that Mr. Blaine
has promised to visit, and this through
Mr. Burton's efforts. He has already
made a brilliant record in the Legisla
ture, having been chosen speaker pro tem
of the House, almost the highest honor
it could confer. The overwhelming ma
jority given him at the primaries is but
an earnest of what the November elec
tion will show. Dickinson county is
proud of Mr. Burton and he will not
fail to do us honor in the Legislative
halls at Topeka.
J. W. Gihson is an esteemed farmer
and business man of South Dickinson.
"When the people of the 69th district
chose him for their nominee they did
well. He has been a stalwart Republi
can since early manhood and will not
fail to carry high the banner of the
party. Mr.G. is, too.an old soldier and a
member of the G. A. R. He fought
with distinguished bravery to protect
his country and will now receive recog
nition. As a citizen and farmer he is
well known as being one of the best in
the county and the farmers of his dis
trict may feel assured that in sending
him to the Legislature they send one
who will protect their interests.
COMMISSIONER, SECOND DISTRICT.
J. W. Baker has proven himself well
worthy another term as county com
missioner. He has looked after the
county's affairs as though they were
his own and has given them his most
careful and considerate attention. The
responsible position which he holds has
never been more ably filled and the
second district could not afford to spare
his presence on the board. His sterling
qualities as a business man make him
eminently fitted for the position and
liis'election is a foregone conclusion.

' ITIGn SCHOOL DIRECTORS.
IiTnomiuating E. T. Ellison, of Abi

positions on the high school board the
convention made strong selections.
Both are gentlemen who will fulfill the
responsible duties of caring for this
educational institution with marked
ability. Both are prominent business
men; both are well and favorably
known throughout the county, and both
will receive the full Republican vote
and may rest sure of an election in November.
Every gentleman mentioned will re

There is nothing to hinder Dickinson
county from piling up a clear, clean
majority for every man on the National,
State and county tickets, and we be
lieve it will be done. All that is nec
essary is for every man to stand firmly
by his principles and accept no "trade"
or compromise with the enemy. In
deed there can be no "trading" this

Streeter As a Landlord.
The editor of the Canton, JlcPherson
county, Carrier wrote recently to the
circuit court clerk of .Mercer county,
Ills., for the personal and political his
tory of A. J. Streeter, Union Labor
candidate for President. The reply is
not Ipngthy but it discloses a rotten
recoid for a leader of a party which
poses as the concentrated essence of
liberty, freedom and equality. It is as
follows:
In answer to your inquiries as to one
A. J. Streeter, the candidate of the
Union Labor party for President of the
United States would say that ilr.
Streeter is a resident of this county.
He is a large land owner owns twenty
five hundred acres in this cuiniy, most
of which is among the finest and most
valuable land in this county. He also
owns laud in other counties and States.
He has a large uumber of tenants on
his farms. I am informed by an old
neighboi of Mr. Streeter's and who has
been a member of the Board of Super
visors representing Streeter's township,
that Streeter was the first landlord in
that section of the country to raise the
rent of his tenants from one-third to
two-fifths of the crops.
He is a large stockholder in the
Farmer's Bank of this place and has
been sinceitsorganization. ilr. Streeter
has been quite a large speculator in the
Chicago Board of Trade as I have been
informed by gentlemen associated with
him in the banking business. He owns
large land and cattle interests in Mis
souri, Finally, my brother, Mr. Streeter is
the most unblushing demagogue and
political blatherskite in the country.
He was originally a Bourbon Democrat
was at home during the war making
money, and as a member of the Board
of Supervisors of the county in 1862,
introduced a resolution against paying
any bills for sugar or coffee furnished
to soldier's families, who were depen
dent on the county for aid.
