Judge was a wonderful marksman, as
full of fun as a magpie; but he was

Ho had splendid teeth, and the Judge
wantei! to secure them as mementoes.
Thn painter of the boat was tied to the
reptile's leg, and we towed him across
an arm of the lake to solid ground. A
small ax was borrowed from the house
"of a "cracker" near by, and we con
cluded to decapitate the prize, btiil the
head, and remove the teeth. The body

fruit trees received attention it was at

was knocked fully ten feet. The rep

sailed out into the lake like a submarine

France is at present suffering from a
plague of wolves, no less than half a mill
ion of these animals being estimated to
exist in France at the present moment.
The damage inflicted by these creatures
in their noctnral raids "from forest and
mountain is estimated at about 50,000,
00D" francs annually. Tho large number
of wolves is the more suprising as a
regular body known as the Louvcterie,
and numbering closo upon 1,000 men,
is maintained specially to keep down
wild beasts; but from tho returns pub
lished it appears that only 355 wolves
were killed in 1871. Two bills have
been introduced on the subject, and it
is proposed to place a high price on the
head of each wolf as high as 200
francs in the case of a known " man-,
eater." I
