of a Practical
Grower.
Wool-
On Januory 1st, 1860, I purchased
and had driven to my barn, twenty fin-vc-oled
old ewes, taken from one of the
best flocks in the county, and paid for
the same forty dol'ars. These twenty
had been the good sheep in their day of
a flock of eighty. My friends told me
they would rejuvenate, os it were, upon
my place. I had no sheep, no knowl
edge of sheep, no practice in tending
them, and hence tried the advice of every
one in managing them. A first rate
full-blooded Spanish Merino buck had
been with these sheep.
The first season lost 2 sheep, raised
12 good lambs, and took 3 1-2 lbs. clean
wool average per head from my sheep.
Used one of the best bucks the Fall of
1860.
Second season lost 2 more ewes,
raised 16 nice lambs, sheared upon an
average 4 lbs per head. Fall of 1861
used an ordinary buck. Wintered 15 of
my sheep, and each raised a lamb.
My old sheep had really recruited.
Their fleeces increased yeaily, and upon
the third clipping season averaged 4 1-2
lbs. ; yearlings and two year olds, 6
lbs. Sold my lambs fall of 1862 for a
high price. My sheep came to the barn
in November in first rate condition ; the
old sheep looked three years younger
than when I got them.
Pleased with my success, I had learn
ed something of sheep and the way to
tend them. Bought ten more old sheep
from the same flock. Used in Novem
ber, 1862, a yearling buekof my own
purchase, selected for "his many and
prominent qualities a full blooded
Spanish Merino. His first fleece of 13
months age, weighed 16 lbs. nice wool.
Spring of 1863 raised 30 very nice
lambs. Those from my young sheep
are second to none. The fourth clip of
these old sheep and their offspring av
eraged 5 3-5 lbs. nice clean white wool
per head. Of these 22 two and three
year old sheep averaged 8 lbs. per head.
My buck sheared 22 1-2 lbs. one year's
growth. Live weight before shearing,
153 lbs. Sold 8 "fat wethers just after
shearing, whose average live weight was
85 lbs. Reckoned in the last clip was
the fleece of the first lamb of my buck,
dropped from a small yearling cosset
November 25th, 1862, which fleece
weighed 3 1-4 lbs. I now have lambs
after that buck, which sheep-men have
urged me to sell to for ten dollars per
head, and two year old ewes fofri double
that sum.
During this three years' experience,
I have satisfactorily learned that there
is a profound science in sheep raising
and wool growing. This science has
both its theory and practice, which re
quires thorough study and careful obser
vation. To young men entering upon the
sheep business, I offer the following
practical observations :
1. Begin with a few common ewes,
and improve by using the best bufks.
2. Keep no more sheep than you can
keep well the year round.
3. Send them carefully, thus, losses,
other than by accident, will be avoided.

Preparing and Planting Apple Seeds.
The Farmer's Oracle gives the fol
lowing directions for planting apple
seeds :
" As much difficulty occurs with ama
teurs in getting up apple and other
small seeds of trees and shrubs, we ap
pend our experience, which proved a
success.
Soak your seeds for twenty-four
hours, or more, in warm water. Mix
thoroughly with treble their bulk of
moist earth ; place in a shallow box
with holes in the bottom, and sink this
box level with the surface of the earth,
covering the top with two inches of soil,
and thus let them remain till spring.
As soon as the ground is fit to work in
the spring, plow, harrow, and otherwise
make your ground mellow and level,
pulverizing all the lumps. Rake off
smooth, as for onions. Put down your
line, and dig a drill two inches deep
under it ; take out your seeds and sow
in the drill, covering them about two
inches, by making a little water course
along near the seeds. Pat the loose
earth along the row with your hoej.and
keep the ground moist, and the young
trees will be up in from two to three
weeks."
