Charles Wells Is Ordered Committed by a
Commission on Insanity.
It required the combined efforts of five
strong men to take Charles Wells from a
cell in the jail to the clerk of the court's
room yesterday. A commission on insan
ity composed of Drs. Ray and Bishop and
Commissioner Walker inquired into the
unfortunate man's case. Wells was in no
condition to answer relevantly any ques
tions and he was returned to his cell,
where he continued to converse with im
aginary persons.
Several witnesses gave testimony which
tended to prove that the man was insane
beyond a doubt. It is said that Wells has
relatives in Philipsburg and that they will
be here some time to-day. The patient
does not evince any set hallucination, but
drifts from one subject to another, and
his insane desire Is not to harm any one.
He will talk about matters connected
with the work he had done in the con
verters, then give orders to some one to
bring him "the crane, the crane." He will
sing a few stanzas, then jump from his
cot and dance a few steps. His wife is in
a delicate condition and was unable to
attend the Inquiry. Wells owns the prop
erty in which his wife resides. He will be
taken to Warm Springs on this morning's
early train.
