(7b be Continued.) Slush vs Slush. SintKWSlUTHY Ky., July 24, 1SS4. Hcsponse to n communication In Hkkald July 10th, under caption of "Slush," by V. Lament, of Millwood. IjuiuouL seems greatly dissatisfied with things In Grayson county. Some men are dlfrsutiHiicd with everything, except what they do, und with every person, except themselves. Lamont seems to be one of this class. It U evident that he is infinitely satisfied with hlnnelf. After throwing his vile spleen at the Scroll and the gentlemanly editor of the Suntjatm, he strikes at the County Superintendent of Common Schools uud the Cuneyvllle examination. There nro three good reasons for believing that Lamont misrepresented the Cuneyvllle examination : 1. One-fourth of the applicants at that examination failed to get certificates. 2. Messrs. Mehr and Spencer are competent uud conscientious examiners. It. The last three or four examining boards for Gray sou county havo beeu notvd for their severity. It Is said to be moredilllcult to get a certllicate In this county than iiinuy of the adjoining counties. Leaving the Sunbeam and the examining board to take care of themselves, I will make n few remarks on Lamont's egotistic attack on the Scroll, First of ull. however, I will say that I have no objection to Just crltlcl'in, but Lamont wrote no criticism What he says, Is mere derision. I would pi y no atten Hon to his Slush" If the readers of the IlKUAhD had read the Scroti. 1. Lamont says that he believes Prof. Arnold Is the editor aud proprietor of the Scroll. Prof. Arnold Is neither Its editor nor Itx proprietor. Tho Lyceum Scroll was a manuscript paper edited by the young ladles of Grayson Seminal Tho eighth number, of which I was the editress, and from which the editor of the Sunbcttm took several extracts, was printed and circulated In Uiaysou county. When the school closed tho paper was dlseon tinned. 2. I admit that the Scroll contained several typographical errors, but such errors uppear in the best of papers. .1 The'Scroll was not Intended for news. If it hud beeu tilled with ucJgh Itorhood slush, aud misrepresentations of publio enterprises uud county perhaiH Lamont would have en Joyed It more. 4. Though only u school paper, the Scroll contained as much common sense or any other paper In tills part of the State. It has been euloglzsd by persons that are as Intelligent as La inuut, and by some that are more Intelligent. C. The fact that Lumoutdid not find "one new Idea" In the Scroll does not prove that It contained no new Id cum. Some persons ure Incapable of finding new Ideas. Possibly, however, this Is not the case with tho profound ami erudite Lumnut. Having explored thu I whole Held of human Ideas uud of dl- vlno knowledge, his infinite mind had received all Ideat, human aud divine, before he read the Scroll, and hence he could not find "one now Idea" In the paper. The Scroll was not published for men of Lamont's genius and erudition It was published for the benefit of those persons that have not reached tho limits of humuu knowledge, and who, consequently, muy receive at least 'one new Idea." u Lament eays'that the contributors to the Scroll 'aro aspirants for the high position of pedagogues and This language was In tended to be Ironical. It is a malicious thrust at the profession of teaching, uud all Intelligent persons will treat It us It should be treated with utter contempt. Without attempting to de feud the profession of teaching, I will say that It Is certulnly us Mhigh" a calling as tlwj one lu which turnout Is engaged. If the young men and young women are preparing to enter upou the arduous uud uuremuuerutive profession ol teaching, tbey should bo prulsed for tho sacrifices that they are about to make for Immunity; uud he tliut npeakw derisively of such heroes uud heroines ought to be utterly nbomlnuted, and oven loathed by all good people. 7. It must tw u bad spirit that leads a man to go out of his county to make uii uttack on uuy olllclal or public enterprise thereof, when he can make It an well In his county. Why did not Lamont present his manuscript at the olllce of the Leltchlleld Sunbeam? Grayson county Is more Interested thuu Ohlocouutylu the things and tier-sons that he attempts to criticize. Then, I repeat, why did he not send tils manuscript to the Sunbeam. 8. I will add that I have a few copies of the Scroll, uud that If any reader of this wishes to see the "film Ibm trash" of which the scholastic uud literary lament complains, aud will write me ujiostul card to that eilect. I shall take pleasure hi sending him or her u u copy of the paper Itespectfully, HicikCoiiu, William Lamont, to tho Editor of the "Loltohtleld Sunbeam." If the luminary that scatters "dun-beams," over Grayson county lias actually and truly HnbwvAl up afler his last gambling uud drinking debauch, I would like to impress upon his mlud u homely old fable, In my owu language, but originating with the ancient slave Esop two thousand years ago, ami us appropriate to-day as It was lu his time. Once upou a time there lived hi the city of Le!tchfle!d,Gruysoticouuty,Ky., u donkey of wonderful sagacity. He was a donkey cf Imitation, not of Invention so when one day u traveling menugarle came along, uud this woudcrful editorial donkey for the llrst time beheld the majestic lion, and listened to his mighty voice, his skull was filled with louglngs to be like unto thu monarch of beasts, and rest or contentment hud he none until by hook or by crook, he had procured u Hou sklu und pinning buck his ears uud hiding his deformity under Its gruceful folds lie tmblushiugly purnded himself before un astonished public lu his new dress. For u time his foolish airs and uu couth gambols were tolerated by the disgusted people, but one day this wonderful editorial ass took It Into his skull that like the noble beast he represented himself to be, he could shake the universe with the thunder of his voice so gathering himself up,foru mighty effort lie essayed thorotr of tho II ju, but alasl alas! the attempt was a complete failure, foi with thu cllurt his disguise dropped off, uud he stood exposed before a luughhig public as the veritable donkey hiiu&shihie voice so unmistakably proclaimed hhu. How does the fable strike you Mr. YugeiV P. 8, My grandmother says: "Do nutlet the slurs of such miserable contemptible minds us the ICditor of thu Leltchlleld SitnUeam trouble you In the least, Willie. Murch straight ahead hi thu path you have marked out for yourself uud Independent of nil thu Hlurs about your druukcu life, you win come out with colors flying at the latter end. My opinion of the Sunbeam aud lis editor is that the sheet Itself Is thu poorest a)M)logy for a Journal of any lu the Statu of Kentucky, and as, for Its editor why he bus not tho br.duqmwcr to edit tho printing department of u paper bag manufactory "and I heartly concur In tho good lady's well express ed opinion. Railroad Ruinhlliicu Alitor HrrtiM t Will you penult a correipoudeut t make some suggestions. A county town like Hartford, should have outlet. The mercantile Interests of the town, the agricultural ami mining Interestsot a largo excellent tho county seat, usbo from the social Interests of tho community seem to indicate a uecesdly for a convenient connection with tho Interests of the country. We are In a dead eddy, while we should, ami can oisily have a prosperous, thriving busy town. I feel strongly Impressed that If we will put our heads together, wo can build a branch railroad from Heaver Dam to Hartford aud get our jeo plo and our business Into the commercial current. It Is no secret that our trade Is lu a Stute of staguutlou und our !coplc, that should lie lively and on the Jumpnre full of apathy and languor. We cuu build a brunch road for u stmill sum; thu distance In short und the expense, we think will not exceed $10,000 for the part we'propose for the citizens and tho town to do. Where there Is a will there Is n way and wo suggest thai a beginning be made. Two or three publin spirited men can put tho matter on foot and get up an Interest that will take uhape directly, lly proper efforts by the right men and the U O. & S. W. H. IX. Co., can be Induced to.uld in constructing u road between the two point named, A proiKwltlou to grade and tie the road from Heaver Dam to Hartford by the citizens would meet a favorable response from the C. O. and 8. W, road und result lu uu agreement by them If that were done, that they would Iron the same and operute It and prolate stock artercompletlou uro a if the the actual amount expended by each. We know that other roads are aiding the building of branch roads Jo tho main line hi this wuy. A road Is now being built from K Ik ton in Todd county to Guthrie In tnls way and the grading and tie will not cost more thuu 2200 per mile. Xow let us think and talk a little for a road for our town. Why not Investigate the mutter and see what the C. O. it S. W. It. II. Co., will do; are we so utterly dead that we cannot try to Mud out; our part will not cost more tlinn $9,000: cau we not raise the amount by private subscription and stock tukeu by the town. The O. O. & S. W, has the Iron at any time we may need It and can easily meet us In our arrangements If we will let them. A road would certanly hoof great to us lu many ways. D. not wnlt until tvo cannot get away from our town uud then begin to tulk railroad or slants water navigation. Cannot we havo a meeting md do something now. Time speeds away; mint we stand still and see other Interests built up at ourexieuse; will not our business men wake up to their Interests before It Is too late. SunscitlliKK. SlunhforR. Campbell- 'You have got yourself Into Uit) company nt last Willie," remarked my grandmother, us she laid down the Hartford Hr.UAhD aud prepared to wipe ol! the moisture that had accumulated ou her spectacles. "Well," she answered "the ioet lauruute of Temperance, Campbell I believe is his name, not taking my lesson ou slush to heart as he should havo done, conies out In this Issue of thellKitAM), with a string of doggerel rhyme, and very poor rhyme at that which ho dubs 'A Dream.' That Is all very well, but ho marches out his majesty himself, and for a companion gives him "Cain" the unfortunate writer of "Slush." Xow Mr. Campbell may be a poet (V) a scholar and a gen tlenmn.btit his egotistical presumption lu trying t curry on his puny shoulders the whole structure of temperance, roof, pillars, props uud foundation, disgusts wldle at tho same time It amuses me. If you do not call that egotism ol the llrst water, then I havo never seen anything that was. Tho Idea of u i hy mster of Mr. Campbell' calibre, overthrowing thu gigantic vice of iu temperance with tho aid of his temperance sounetn, us ho calls them, Is tudrcrous In tho extreme, uud would make mo laugh but pity for the man counteracts the eflcct uud I feel more Ilkoshcddlng tears over his lusau.
