The "golden haze" of the traditional Indian summer, in the glory of which the traditional Indian harvested the yellow corn and theoretically worship ped the south-western God, who presided over the season, is not a.,parent in the pre. sent murkiness. True, tile skies are glori ously blue, (ditto a good many people) there e is an amorous warmth in thle winds. and the stars o' night glitter with a brilliancy seldom equalled and never excelled. But all this would be better without the smoky deception which bears about the same rela- r tion to thbegenuine tiing as the juice of Dead 8sa apples would to Oregon cider-the same that Osborne & Dennee have for sale. (By the way, MAr'. splendid.) What we are getting at in this, in a sort of round-Rbin. Hood's-barn-into-the-house sort of a way is, that right down over and into the valleys D the winds aredrifting dense clouds of smoke $ from the immense and numerous Ares now A raging in tile mountains. There is nothing q particularly charming about the smoke. a and there is a great deal positively destruc- a tive in the fires. All of them are the re- Ja sults of positive carelessness or malicious Fl Intent on the part of campers. While some of them may do little injury, others destroy N immense bodies of timber which, if not A. apparently now, will, ere long, he valuable R and required. There is a stringent law Jw against leaving camp fires uncxtinguished, but aside from that every man should *ap' preciate himself the crinmnality of devasta. J, ting the mountains by carelessness in ieav Tb Ing fires. As many hunting parties are D' leaving for the mountains, we earnestly call Ti their attention to this mtter, and urge then, Fr on breaking camp, to extinguish their lIrv, AI Each day the wooMds are becoming dryer Th and theim destruction more wide spread. By T and by these now existkg will exhalust , themselves, and a repetition of them can he avoided by a little attention. It is worthy .t it Breakfast at Meads.' (1raitm Somethiag Needed.-We weo shown, a day or two ago, by Mr. PhiL E. JEvans, eole fine S mples of Oregon Club wheat and Hoopes rye grown on his ranch near Deer Lodge. From 28 lbs. of seed rye ; be has harvested 1,000 lbs. of as ine. plump hoere as a farmer would wish to see. The variety is well adapted to the valley, as it stands frost welL It is also a notMeeable fact that in the recent hail-storms which w did enasiderable damage to some crops, this rye was but little injured, as the stalk curves near the head and hail striking on the side and stalk end of the husk. does not thresh it as it the straight stalk varieties. Mr. Evans says his wheat will average I h saout 83 bushbil to the acre. which is three or four times tl:e general average of the old grain States. He. like all other tarmers of the valley, Is desirous of having a flouring Smill put up in thbis valley. Parties with means have been waiting until the farmers would demonstrate that the valley was a good grain-producing one. by large actual crops, alleging intent in that event to put up a mill. On the other hand, the farmers my, "what is the use in sowing heavy crops of grain when there are no facilities for grinding it nearer than lelena or Missoula, O0 or 90 miles away;" and so one has waited upon anolher, until the inlcdental culture of a few acres of wheat here and there for seed, feed or experiment, has placed the ea pIaility of the valley beyond question. Last spring a couple of ranchmen in the valley contemplated the purchase of a mill, but we have heard nothing of it recently. A couple of gentlemen In Deer Lodge, well fixed to build a mill big enough to grind all the grain product of Montana, still later assured us of their disposition to bring out machin ery and erect a mill when the farmers had shown the valley was grain-produotive and that cultivation tended in that direction. They have not yet "declared intentions" to build. A few days since we learned, a gentleman, now in Wyoming, at the solidi tation of a friend here, entertains the idea of erecting a fluring-mill in this place. It is time now for some one to give one of these projects effect The farmers of Deer Lodge will raise 20,000 bushels of wheat next year if there is certainty a mill will be erected. It would develop a great, profit. aibe, permanent resorce; have gold effect in settling the unoccupied lands, add to the industrious and productive element of the c coounry, provide against flour famines like c ehat which threatenued two or three months ago,.and withal. it would be one of the best paying investments that could be made. s Who will build the mill? That will be a splendid paee to boat pro. ~ visions in the winter, when one half of the I river is iee and the other half rapids. It will afford employment to a great many per. sons, very few of whom will mine in the winter. True. but little is known of the mines. Three-fourths of those going will only take provisions enough to reach there, Sand if the mines should prove a bilk there will be a winter stampede out unparalleled in history for its sufferings and fatalities. True, those who want to go could winter here, and go next spring before anything more is done than will be when they reach there this fall, and then if It proves a bilk they need not go. But that would'nt he stampeling to Pece river. Some who did not stampede to Frazier river are better off than those who did. We do not wish to discourage any one going. But take pro visions enough, boys, to come home on if i you find thl Peace river mines limited to I what one hundred men can work, and noth - ing between that and Montana that is worth staying with.
