'The latter enjoys ain enviable rep t:tation among the business houses of Mlo,:tana, and furnishes thme est of goods at the lowest prices. They are the most enterprising clothiers in the Territory and earn patronage by deserving it. M. Rowles, the 1popular freighlter. In retu'n for this lhoughtful kindness we shall place under tie stone a copy of l'oneroy'` DJmocrli, containing Mr. Vaughn's last commauni cation to that journal, and thus endeavor to perpetuate the literary fame of our old time friend, which we hope may be as imperishable as his granite offering. It is said that one of the leading saloon keepers of Benton is negotiating fbir an invoice of hurdy-gurdys, to be shipped frotm Bismrarck via the river, We are not sure that this enterprise will be any detriment to Benton. D)ancing damsels of questionable repute may not improve the morals of a community, but. they are several shades better than negro prosti tutes, and it is thought they will have the effect of driving out the latter. If social evils of this class are an indispens able feature of Benton, by all means let us have the hurdys. The - Ellms, a popular social club of Benton, will celebrate the national anni versary of Independence with a ball at the Centennial Hotel on the evening of the glorious Fourth of July. The - Elms always give excellentt entertain" ments, and the one now proposed will doubtless be no exception to the rule. Invitations will be ready for distribution on Monday next. The committee con i sists of .. W\Vo.lsey, W. O. Dexter, W. S. !Conway and Al. Lester, It is proper to state that the dash used bofore the tit.e of the club is not a substitute for the word "slippery." We are requested not to publish the full name. The rain having ceased, wx.rk was re- newed on the new tRcoanu bii:: \Vednesday, and tle wais are ;i: up rapidly. Weather permitti 1, roof will be on within thirty d: soon thereafter as practicable our new machinery will be set up and the RtI:e~ic , enlarged to a thirty-six column auu per. The Iherald recently offered us some un necessary advice regarding the expense of running large papers. Since then we have concluded to make the lE:coin) somewhat larger than was at first pro posed, and our new sheet will be about the size of two lferalds. A new establishment, under the firm name of Manix i Milot, will shortly be opened at Sun River, in the building formerly occupied by W. G. Allen, with a new and conlplete stock, of merchan dise, consisting of drygoods, boots and shoes, hardware, tinware, crockery, har ness and a full stock of staple and fancy groceries. Mr. Manix was tor years a clerk in the store of J. H. McKnight & Co., at Fort Shaw, and Mr. Milot was Postmaster and station keeper on the Dearborn river. The firm starts out wiutce. fnemstock, plenty of ca pital and lots of energy and experience to do business. They can hardly fail to succeed. The shipment of cattle via the Missouri has become one the prominent features of upper river navigation. Nearly every steamer leaving this port takes away Smore or less cattle destined for Bismarck and other markets, and all the cattle driven into Choteau County finds ready Isale at remunerative prices. This is one of the reasons why Choteau is the best cattle county in Montana, and our es teemed contemnpor'ary, the Ifusbandman, will have soe sone difficulty in showing that Meagher County has the same advantage for disposing of cattle. The cattle men now engaged in the round up say that all the cattle wintering on the Teton, Marias and other ranges within the county lines of Clhateau have fared better and sustained fewer losses than those in other counties. The reason is, that the said ranges have more sheltered nooks for shielding the cattle from storms, vet allowing them the full benefit of lhe warm Chiuook winds, which pass freely over the ranges at all seasons of the year to a point some distance north of the Marihriver. It his been fully dem onstrated that the grasses on hile Teto.i and Marias nranges are of various grades, and contain more nutriment than those of other sections even within this county. It is also a fact that the blue joint and bunch grass of Chotean county is never destroyed b ftrbst, but cures thoroughly in the ground and retains all its nu uicious yua.itie? fLroughout the fall and A PUBLIC WANT SUPPAIED A COPLETE TLUMER YARD Nman, ai no mm C onsisting of Siding, Flooring, Ceiling.
