We learn that the ladies of Benton propose giving some entertainments during the Holidays for the benefit of the t Episcopal Church building fund. Since 1 the great success which attended their efforts at the late concert we have no doubt of their ability to accomplish a great deal in this direction and we wish them God speed in their good work. Surely no town needs a church edifice more than Benton, and we sincerely hope t it may be built. The Rev. The citizens of Benton will I be pleased to learn that the Reverend I gentleman will visit them for this purpose t the first Sabbath of every month during t the year, commenceing with November, i879. This arrangement was perfected C by Bishop Tuttle, after his visit to Benton t last summer, in compliance with the expressed wish of a large number of our people who were anxious to have the attendance of some good minister at stated intervals. Mr. Blackistone reached , us on his first visit almost unannounced, and many of the people did not learn of i his presence until too late to attend service. AN M. P. MURDERED. Mr, Jusep i Lessard, who returned from Fort Walsh on Wednesday last, reports the killing of a mounted policemani I named G ayburn, about five miles friom Fort Walsh, on the 17th inst. Grayburn had been detailed as herder or horise guard, and while riding Irom the Fort to the herders e'n.mp was waylaid and trea(ch. erouslv murdered. When n.i (ed,. search was iade b1) a party of' polieemen; heanled by Iraveilie, the guide, who fi's, discovered the trail of the mis sing man's horse, together with a moccasin track and the foot prints of an , Indian pony. Following these a short distance, the party disec vered b lod spots upon the snow, and other imarks plainly indicating where the man had fallen from his horse. Further search soon revealed the body of Gra xburn about twenty yards from the trail, down a steepl embankment. He was quite dead, and an examination of his wounds showed that he had been shot from behind, the ball ranging upward, passing through the lungs and lodging under the skin on the right breast. It is conjectured, that the unfortunate policeman was met by two Indians, one on foot, the other riding a pony , and while riding along and con s versing with the two, the Indian on foot e treacherously shot him from behind, killing him instantly. The two then r threw his body over the embankment. O The case was at once reported at the t Fort, and Col. Macleod ordered a guard h placed over the remains that night, and the day following the Colonel rode to the e scene of the murder and held an inquest, e the verdict of which was that deeeased died from the effects of a gun shot - wound administered by some party un n known. Good trailers were then set to r work to follow the murderer. Lavel l lie followed up the horse track until it led 1 into an almost imnpenetrable thicket, where the horse of the murdered policeman was found tied to a tree and shot just behind the ear. Close by Grayhurn's belt and, ammunition were also found, but no trace J of his gun was discovered. The mocca sin track was trailed up to the snmmit of the mountains where it circled around to e the scene of the murder, fr-om thence r circling and re-circling until it finally e led to the camp of the Blood Indians near the Fort. Suspicion points strontly towards the Bloods, and the best prairie and mountain trailers are working up the case- The murdered ranu was bur. f ied on Monday with mihita::y honors. This, we believe, is the first serious evidence of hostility shown by a Northern Indian to.v'ards the Mounted Police, and r while it may afford no immediate cause o for alarm, it is perhaps an indication of the general fieltin` among the Blood Jldiutus, at least, if not among the Sioux and eth.r tribes. If discovered, a speedy e mample should be made of the Indian murderer, and the authority of the Police e should be strengthned by an inereased military force. NOTICE.
