IN.e inferior jfournnl STANFORD, 3CY. Friday Morning, May 14, 1SS0. ir. v. ir.ir.rov. f'.for vk nni.i.Mt. Daring llio exciting nnd Important campaign wo nro about lo enter, llie IsTrmott Jouimt. will clvo llie latest mid most reliable news of the progress of events, nml lo llie end that evervtwdr may leen abreast with tlieni. to liave decided to tenil it from now till January lit, 189l f r osu bOi.Mlt, to all c.in luh-cri lien. Send in vour dollar now anil get the full benefit of it. From all points ol the country there nrisei n general ami determined kick ag.iimt (Irani the machine can didate for a third term, and the pro pert fur tint IndUidual to become the "Dulco of America" ii far from lwing at rosy to him and liis friends as erst while. The Chicago County Conven tion resulted in the defeat of (Irant, but hi; ruin or ruin friend, seeing their weakness, withdrew anil held a little ronventiun of its own. In New York and Pennsylvania, liolh of which instructed for him, there hat b;en a bollnmong the delegates, while in Ohio the opposition lo Grant is boll and outspoken, hundreds ot prominent Kepuhlicnns having, over their own signatures, taul that they will in no event support him for the Presidency, Tho fact of the buiines is, Grant is not the popular choice of his party. Tho machine men,Conkling, Cameron and such, havo used their utmost en deavors to lo foist him upon the coun try again, and ijr n lime it appeared that they were likely to secure his nomination, but his corrupt adminis trations and the manner in which he congregate! thieves around him, and when they were found out, how he re gretted to nccept their resignation, as in the ruse of IMknap, are too fresh in the minds of the people, who nre rapidly coming forward to protest again! his return to power. Whim: never so wild and rampant in our devotion to Mr. iilden, as to think, much less to say, that he is the only Democrat that can he elected President nt these I'nited States, or to imagine that without him the Dem ocratic party had no iue, we have all along hoped that he could so ar range affairs in his onu .Slate as to leave no doubt of his ability to carry it by nn overwhelming majority. This he has signally failed to do, not being nble even to get tho instructions of 'eiy York in n convention, in which John Kelley had no hand, to say nothing of the bitter oposilion to him exprweil by the convention of winch Kelley was the head centre. It wculd lx a most fitting rebuke to that unscrupulous party which perpetrated the great fraud on the Democracy, to have vindicated both It and him by n re-election, but wiles tho delegates from New York can, nt the Cincin nati Convention, count, without the shadow of .1 doubt, on the Klectori.il oloof that State for him, Tilden can not and will not bo the iiomiiiee. A foiiiiui-o.M)E.NT of the Somerset llqmler from Woodstock writes that I. W. Alcorn, I. '!., made a most fa vorable impression there and adds that he travels on his merits, nml not astride a whisky bottle. Can this bo an insinuation that the other candi date depiuds on the whisky bottle to carry him through? Perish such t thought ' Why, the mail's an eutliu siaslic Murphy, and sports a gold headed cane indented by tho loving ladies of Lancaster for his devotion lo the (cniicraiiee came ! Mir. WiilTTiionsn, of Tennessee, oilered a bill Tuesday to reduce the pay of Senators and Legislators to $.5o( er month, with pay only during the sessions, hut when it came to a ute tho "no" that followed was loud and deep enough to shake the Capital from centre to circumference. An other proposition to reduce tho pay from 8.1,000 to 81,000 met a ilmilar k wii 1 be seen ly his card in an ' ithi-r column, Judge Durham lias df , dined in make the race fur the Dent "ratio nomination for Congress, de cision which, tinder the circumstances, tsawheand patriotic one, ami 0110 which mint rommend -Jdm mnro than ever to ibo patty he has so well served. Looking nt the n:tlon of llie Conven tion which nominated Mr. Thompson by but the fraction of n vole, from his standpoint, it is but human nature for Judge D. and his many friends to feel that he was euchred out nf the nomination, whether that be n fact or not, and it is also but natural that he should havo wanted to see himself vindicated by tho people. His rcfu sal, therefore, to make the race, which would have been on entirely personal gronnds, and would havo engendered the worst of feelings and the Intenct bitterness for tho sake ofharmony in tho rarty, especially on the eve of our great National kittle, is an act that will lie promptly rewarded by the De mocracy whenever he desires it. With his National reputation, acquired in six years of lianl service in 1 on gres, his devotion to the principles of Ins patty, and his well-known ability for faithfully performing every trust imposed on him, Judge Durham ran fiord to bo magnanimous and for the sake of an undivided Democracy, I every true Democrat will rejoice that he has shown that commendable spirit. Tun issue is not Grant or Tilden. It is victory or defeat. No man who has declared even though the decla ration came from betwixt the sherry and the champagno that in case Til den is defeated lie will espouso (he cause of Grant will lie permitted to lay down a policy and make Ken tucky Democrats "waltz up to it." We care not whether Kentucky's del egates to Cincinnati areTilden or ami Tilden, so their individual preferences arc not of so pronounced a character as to carry them over to the enemy in cao they do not meet their fruition. Mr. Watterson has declared (hat ho is not averse to going lo Cincinnati as a delegate from the Slate nt large, but the State nt largo will Ihj very averse to having him go in that capacity tin til he comes out from his maze of met' aphorical con fusion and lets us see ex nctly where and how he stand. Howling Green Intelligencer. Nhxt Monday is the day sit apart by Wiitterson to print tho resolutions which nro to be "nnllzed up" to by the Democracy of iheStato when they n-cmble in Convention nt Lexington on (lie lTlh of June. Wo rattier sus pect that this gentleman's bullying has gone just far enough, and that there will be very little of the waltzing up on the occasion. The cry epmes up from all parts of the State, "Send true men as delegates to Cincinnati, but leave them free to o(e as they may deem best for the good of tho party." Wt: endorse every word of the Dan ville Aueucalt complimentary re marks aliout Senator J. II. Uruce. Wo had occasion during the session to ob-ervo how highly he was held in tho esteem of his colleagues, and how greatly his dignified influence was felt. We would like to eo him go back lo the Capital, nnd if he wants to go he can count us for him, first, last and all the time. McDonald, one of tho St. Louis whisky ring, who served a term of imprisonment for his crooked acts, says that ho has letters and other cvi denrcs to prove that he suffered his sentence to shield Grant, who was con cerued iu the ring, and that if he is nominated for the Presidency, he in tends to put up his proof. It will bo rich, rare and racy. Tun friends ot Mr. W. O. Cun ningham, editor of the Kichmoiid Herald, will urge Ins selection as elector by the Lexington Convention. The selectiou would lie a good one, and would tic a just compliment to a true Democrat, who has doue in the ranks some good work for his parly.
