LETTER FROM LOS NIETOS.
We learn that Michael Howies, an
old man, und, we believe, a Southern
Methodist Minister from Sonoma
county, while pausing through a cafion
about f>i> miles west of Los Angeles,
last Friday, was stopped by lour high
waymen, one American and three
.Mexicans, and robbed of 1583 and a
good horse, and then tied and left iv
the brush, where he remained for three
hours before relief came. The old man
is now destitute, and his swollen wrists
heal' testimony of liehi"; tightly hound
by the cords of the cruel (tends.
Hurrah for the city of Nietos! Mr.
Crowel 1 1 the enterprising merchant at
the college, la moving his store-house
and goods to the new city of Nietos.
Mr. CroweM Is entitled to the belt and
a good run of customers) for being the
Alpha of this future great city. Who
will he next? Don't all come'at once!
Alt. Benbrooke, the popular saloon
tan.*!! of Los Angeles county, is making
arrangements to start a first-class sa
loon at the new city.
Mr. Carnes will soon creel a large
und comfortable hotel.
Who speaks first? We want a livery
nnd feed stable, and we must have it.
Speak quick, or the chance will be
taken. -
Drs. Smith and Fulton will be there
iv a few days with their drug store,
and will set the broken limbs, if any
should lie run over and maimed by the
locomotive.
Weather pleasant, days just warm
enough to be delightful, and nightsjust
the right temperature to sleep the full
twelve hours without feeling In the
least fatigued.
Health good, no cholera, no yellow
fever, no small-pox or measles, no
chills or levers; but all have an appe
tite for four square meals a day.
We arc waiting with anxious expec
tations to hear from the Conference of
the Methodist Church South, now in
session at San Bernardino. Their col
lege will be located at the present ses
sion. The magnificent donation by
Hon. B. D. Wilson, of a tine frame
building at Wilmington for a college,
Is truly liberal, hut it looks to us as
useless to f lie church for a college. A
saw-mill is not very remunerative
property without timber to saw; net*
ther is a college, where there are no
children to educate. If we are forced
to hoard our children away from home
to educate them, why not send them
to the college already built aud en
dowed? Locate the college at Nietos,
and we can stock it with pupils and
board them at home. OBSERVER.
Rest after Eating.—Every man
who owns a horse, und most men are
fond of driving) know that the horse
cannot safely take its food immediate
ly alter work; but how many men ap
ply the same rule to themselves? The
New York merchant or financier who
takes pride in the line team which
steps before him in the park, would
uugryly dismiss as a culpable Igno
ramus the best hostler, who would al
low the inmates of the stable to tuke
their midday oats as he takes his
lunch in the down-down restaurant.
The professor, in the midst ot prepar
ing his learned and exhaustive
treatise, hears the dinner bell, and
begs to be excused for a moment
while he spurs up his brain to do just
v bit more important work, and rushes
with the ink still wet on his linger
and the deep thought-lines still set Oil
his brow, to partake of food which
must product' discomfort unless helms
the stomach of an ostrich. Remem
ber the rules by which the teamster
or the jockey preserves the horse for
its labors; rest before eating, quiet
during eating, rest alter eating.
THKRIditT TO LlflHT AND AfU.—
Chancellor Bates, of Delaware, has
delivered v decision of interest to real
estate owners and builders. J. H.
Primrose, of Smyrna, began over two
years ago to build v shed in the
rear of hta storehouse, The adjoining
property is occupied by Dr. J. E.
Clawson, and the shed, when finished,
would have closed Up the window of
the doctor's sitting room. He there
fore obtained a preliminary injunc
tion restraining Primrose from work
on the shed, and the Chancellor has
made the injunction perpetual. He
declares, in his opinion, that the
right to light and air, enjoyed with
out interruption for over -0 years,
rests on the same grounds as all other
corporeal rights; that the common
law of England, adopted by Delaware
iv 177t), provided that where light and
air had been admitted to a dwelling,
from any quarter, uninterruptedly for
a period of twenty years and over, it
could not he shut oil'; anil us there
was no statute covering the case, the
common law must guide him iv his
decision.
Tornado.—On Friday morning ol
lust week, us K. M< Day, proprietor of
the Cambria stage line, was driving
leisurely along the coast between
Rafael and Villa creek nml the Cuyu
eo» t he wa* overtaken and nearly an*
ni'.dated by a whirlwind. He in
forms us that tor a time his prospect
for making a trip to Europe against
the Graphic balloon waa very good.
His wagon was raised from the ground
several times, the cushions und every
thing in the vehicle was carried uway.
The air was tilled with debris und the
howling of the wind so terrified his
horses that they stopped and scream
ed uloud with fright. On coming fur
ther south he found that the sand
hills lying between the lake be
low Old creek and the ocean
* bad been razed to a level with the sea.
The citizens of Mono can congratu
late themselves upon the narrow
paoape. Had the tornado struck it,
it would probably have leveled the
town.—[Sun Luis Obispo Tribune,

make Its appearance. Tho Dally will be a
neat and tastily printed leven-COlnmn news
paper, newsy rather than literary in charac
ter. The Weekly will ho a six-column, eight
page paper, and will contain the most impor
tant matter that has previously appeared in
Tut: Daily herald.
It Is proposed that the 11kkai.ii shall be an
Unboughl advocate of every Interest pert din
ing to southern California and Arizona, and
a zealous worker in all things th.it shall tend
to benefit the State. Iv a word it will belli
close communion witii the People. In its col
umns, from time to time will be found mat
ter* of interest to the California Farmer, Me
chanic, Merchant, Laborer, and all classes of
Producer*) and it will ulso contain reading
matter suited to the Home Circle.
The Hekai.d will be nil Independent Dcino
ciatie journal and its efloits directed to sweep
ing from power nnd place those now misman
aging the affairs of ihe Nation. For the accom
plishment ofthisciid, it will hail willisatlsfac
tlon i in' co-operation ofthe member* of all Par
ties, believing that the prosperity, perhaps
safety, of the Nation depends upon the success
of a movement of tins character, it is" reform
now or revolution hereafter,"
The IIKK.VI.I) Will advocate Stale Rights and
oppoM Central it at intii it will encourage White
and oppose Coolie Imiiilgratieii. It will favor
Free Trade, und oppose Protective Tnrllf; It
will advocate a Greenback Currency for Call
fornia, and oppose the present dwarfing ami
deadening policy which upholds the present
ruinous rates of interest and shuts out Eastern
capital, it win advocate the People and op
pose Monopolies, no matter what guise they
may assume.
While the HEKAI.D Will treat Slavery as a
dead Issue, It will earnestly advocate the
right of every State, he It Northern or South
ern—Massachusetts or South Carolina -to gov
ern itself iii accordance with the wishes of its
people, and the dictates ofthe Federal Con
stitution, without national interference.
The Hkkai.d will opppse thieving and pecu

he earns It. Every dollar which Is taken
from the public treasury or private purse
without a just return is robbery, and lie who
takes this money is a thief. Believing this,
the llKKAI.l) w ill oppose salary steals, custom
steals, land steals, railroad steals, and every
kind of steals.
Each day, the fullest Foreign and Domestic
