UNITED STATES SENATOR.
Editor Herald:—Now that the
question of a United States Senator is
before tiie people, and seeing that one
of the San Francisco papers has prom
inently set forth the name of Gov. J.
G. Downey as a thoroughly eminent
and lit man to represent our great
State in that body, permit me to in
vite the attention of the State at large
to the fitness and propriety of this ex
cellent name for that honorable posi
tion. Governor Downey is a represen
tative man. A man Mho is thorough
ly identified with every conceivable
interest of the entire State. A man
whom our people feel, seizes hold, and
comprehends our resources, and who
is not in connection, or entangled ln
alliance with any of the great monopo
lies in this State, or the United States;
a careful, shrewd thinker—both in
matters of local concern, as well as the
graver matters of State; a man who
would bring to bear an untrammeled
judgment and a devotion of mind in
which the whole people of the State of
California would feel was exercised
for their greatest possible good. The
whole State, for once, ought to concede
to Southern California this honor.
We have never had a member of Con
gress or a Senator during the twenty
years of our State sovereignty, and
surely the time has arrived when this
justice should be conceded.
GRANGER.
Fire.
The fire brigade were called out last
evening about six o'clock by an alarm
of fire on San Pedro street. It proved
to be the stable of Mr. Herwig, the
express man, which, with several
bales of hay was entirely consumed.
Mr. Herwig's horses were got out
without injury. The stable of Mr.
Heller, adjoining, also took fire, but
the flames were extinguished without
much damage, except a slight scorch
ing of one of the horses. The fire com
pany did good service as soon as they
got to work; but had some difficulty
in getting water. It is fortunate that
it was a calm evening, as, if a strong
wind had been blowing, much greater
loss would probably have occurred.
