Yesterday's Dispatches
Washington, Dec.
The navy department has comple
ted all necessary arrangements for the
reception of the Virginias and the
transfer of the surviving passengers
and crew at Santiago do Cuba from
prison to one of the United States ves
sels of war, in accordance with the
terms of the diplomatic agreement.
The Canandaigua, carrying ten guns,
will sail from New York for Havana
to-morrow to receive the prisoners at
Santiago de Cuba. Rear Admiral
Scott, at Key West, will have the
strongest naval force under his com
mand that has been collected by a
government at any of our ports since
the termi nation of the war. The mon
itors Saugus and Mnhopac are there
already with the Ossipee and Worces
ter. The latter is the Admiral's ship.
The Colorado sails to-night from New
York. She is a screw steamer carry
ing sixteen guns. The Florida, carry
ing sixteen guns, is to follow to-mor
row. The Franklin and Brooklyn, the
former carrying thirty-nine and the
latter twenty guns, will sail from Bos
ton in a week.
Boston, Dec. 10.
The market for fleeces continues ex
cited over recent large sales which
have reduced stocks so much that de
sirable lots are now difficult to obtain
except at an advance, and holders are
confident that quotations will soon be
higher from the fact that the crop of
domestic wool is small in all parts of
the count jy. Good demands for pulled
wool. Sales of superfine and extra at
45<a)50c and very choice superfine 51@
52c. California has been selling at 17
@18c for Fall; at 24@30 for Spring, ac
cording to quality.
London, Dec. 10.
Tbe report that a large number were
killed by the railroad accident near
Birmingham to-day was incorrect.
No lives were lost.
Versailles, Dec. 10.
Lachaud, the counsel for Bazaine, in
his peroration said: " I deeply sympa
thize with the valiant soldier who is
overwhelmed by this terrible accusa
tion. He does not fear death, for he
is brave and fears nothing but the loss
of his honor for the sake of his wife and
children. I must feel for France,
which will deplore the loss of a valor
ous soldier. Your Honor's patriotism
forbids you to condemn nini. You
know what political trials are. We
are on the spot where posterity has
raised statues to those executed, after
such trials."
Havana, Dec. 10. a
Telegrams announcing' the refusal
of the United States to allow the Vir
ginlus to be delivered to a neutral
power, create dissatisfaction here, the
impression for the last three days being
that the United States would consent.
The Captain General of Porto Rico
assembled the directors of the different
journals and requested them, in view
of the probablity of war witli the Uni
ted Btates, to drop party discussions
and only occupy themselves with
Spain and the means of raising the
public spirit so as to repulse foreign
aggression if necessary. Hs also de
sired the journals to abstain from pub
lishing anything which might hurt,
the susceptibilities of Fatherland and'
the Washington Government. In his
{iroclamation the Captain General be
haves that amicable relations will re
main uninterrupted between Spain
and the United States.
Pourcette replied, demanding a ver
dict so that the atonement may be a
terrible example as well as a lesson to
the rising generation.
Before the Judges withdrew Bazaine
said: "I have two words in my breast,
honor and country. I have never been
wanting toward this proud motto du
ring tortyrtwo years of service. I
swear belore Christ I have not be
trayed France." After a long deliber
ation the Judges declared Bazaine
guilty of the charges of the capitula
tion of liletz and of the army in the
open field, and unanimously condem
ned him to death, and to be degraded
from rank* previous to the execution.
After judgment was rendered all the
members of the Court signed an ap
peal for mercy, which the Due Aumale
immediately conveyed in person to
President MaeMahon. Bazaine was
Sreatly agitated when he heard the
ecision of the Court.
Latter from Lot Nitloti,
Los Nietos, Dec 10;
Owing to the heavy and continued
rains since last Wednesday night there
has been but little corn delivered at
this depot. It is impossible to bring
corn here at present.
The exports of last week were-804
sack corn to San Francisco: 44*0 sucks
in depot ready for shipment. Imports
about 135,000 feet of lumber, to Grif
fith, Lynch A Co; or»e case merchan
dise, to F. Jacoby; 1 case books to John
C. Ardis; 2 cases to W. R. S.
There is yet a great deal of corn to
be delivered here as soon ac It can be
hauledto wagons to the depot. The
post week was very unfavorable, Tues
day and Wednesday being the only
two days of the week when corn could
be brought here. A few days of sun
shine and the agent may expect all he
can do in receiving and forwarding
corn. fcH3OrIAOB» AO 0/A 231 J.
This place is making some improve
ment, and now with lumber at hand
we expect more improvement. We
need the postofflce and terminus of
the stage fine here, and a first-class
hotel, and we will bs ready for busi
ness.
It is rumored that the Odd Fellows
will build | ball here. Come on.
