SATURDAY EVENING, JANUARY 1.
London's Socialistic Refuge.?It is
seriously proposed to take up the stones
and asphalt in Trafalgar Square and lay it
oat as a park or garden. Thi3 is suggested
because of riotous assemblages that so often
take place there. Trafalgar Square is really
the centre of London, and the disorders
element look upon it as a sort of city of
refufce. All property holders in the vicinity
are strongly in favor of the change. The
argcst Lute-Is i:; Louden are situated in the
vicinity. These hotels pay taxes to the
amount of $300,000 per annum, and they are
getting tired of boarding up their windows
rr> save themselves from the hands of rr.oKs
Prior to the recent meeting of tbe socialist
in Trafalgar Square, hotels near there re
ceived (bods of telegrams countermanding
orders for rooms.
Trafalgar Square is the most celebrated
gathering pla':e for popular assemblages in
the world. Fully oue hundred thousand
people can congregate there. It is graced
by the Nolson column, about two huudrcvi
t'oet high, with LanoTseer's four splendid
lions couchant ttnd statues of Wellinctcr,
Napier and nave-lock.?London dispatch.
