A Sharp Confidence Game.
Louis Nadin, a Frenchman, residing in
Mobile, Ala., made the olurtdng and unex?
pected discovery tbat he bad been robbed,
as long ago as November 30, of about eleven
thousand dollar-: irj mouey and bonds by
a bold and successful confidence ^atnu.
Some timo in the latter pars of November,
Nadin made the acquaintance of a French
mau?a new-comer about whom he knew
uothing except that he was a countryman.
The two were often together and eventually
became good friends. Thij new acquain?
tance then introduced Nadin tu another
Freuchmuu, who, he said. \va.-s an acquaint*
ancc of his, aud all three finally became in?
timate. When these two new fi lends Lad j
gained Nadin'.-: confidence, one of them pre- j
tended to receive intelligence of the death '
of his father. He manifested areat grief,
expressed a desire to nave masses t!;ii-l for
the repose of his dead purents' sou', ;?.::?;
showed Nadin a large amount of money,
which, he said, be wouid spend for ;bat pur?
pose. Nadin, to reciprocate the confidence
displayed by his friend, Bhowed some
of his own possession.", in the
shapo of bonds. The other French
man said tbat he had tome bonds
and valuables iu p. box in bis room at the
Hotel Royal. Nadin insisted that a hotel
was not a sale place for such treasures, und
upon bis suggestion the Frenchman got his
box aud displayed I lie gold m.:' bonds which
it contained. A few seconds iater Nadin
was called from the room, and when be re?
turned his friend told him that be had put
his (Nadin's) treasures iu bis own box,
which he turned over to the Mobile in an for
safe keeping, saying that he bad to go to
San Antonio, but would be back it. tend aye.
Nadin.never Buspected anything wrong un?
til Sunday when he broke open his friend's
box und found that there was no:hing jh it
but a number of newspapers aud a lot of
lead. Ho reported lue case to tho police,
wh? hau? used the telegraph freely with il.c I
hope of capturing the thieves.
John Roach Dying.?It is known that
for some weeks John Roach, the great ship?
builder, has been confined to bis residence
in gradually failing health. According to
his owu desire thai bis friends should not
be needies-sly alarmed and appreheneive of
the efJtcl upon bim of learning the real na?
ture of the disease from which he is suffer?
ing, hi* family and physiciai i have been
reticent in tegHni I" bis condition. Mr.
Koach, however, now realizes fully tho im
possibility of recovery, and the reason for
concealment no longer i xiste. In view of this
fact a representative of Mr. Reach's family
makes the following concise and autborita j
live statement of the invalid'.- condition:
Mr. Itcach is beyond the .-each of medical
help, save in the alleviation of bis sufferings,
which have long been incessant and intense.
His disea-e is cpitbelioma, and its develop
ment has been vory bimilar to the case of
Gen. Grant, the location, however, being
the roof of the mouth instead of the throat.
All efforts to arrest its progress have failed,
and only bis powerfal constitution has ttis
toineil Mr. Koach so long. Ho hr.3 never
seen a well day since jho entire nervous
prostration consequent upou bis assignment
eighteen iuoqiLb ago. From that crushing
blow he could not rally, and <he cancer be
gan to develop last January. Iu March an
operation was performed, in the hope that
the disease migbt be eradicated. In tho
summer the trouble returned, and if- became
evident to the physicians that there was no
hope. Mr. Reach is now failing rapidly,
bis agony being relieved only by anodynes.

Earthquake in Maryland.?Dispatch
es have been received from West minster,
Frederick, Emmetttburg, and other towns
in western Maryland, stating i hat the in?
habitants were considerably excited over
violent, ?bock? aud loud rumblings, which
had awakened them from sleep, and con?
tinued at intervals from 11:30 Sunday night
until early next morning. No damage was
done so far as can be learned, but as that
country is mountainous tho people are ap?
prehensive of grave trouble. Congrsssiusn
Shaw, who lives at Westminster, eaye ho
was awakened by what sounded like the
blasting of rocks, ami pictures were shaken
from wails in olher housts. He beard two
distinct shocks in rapid succession. Tho
mercury at Westminster was 4 degrees be?
low zero vesterdov morning.
Russia's Canal Scheme.?Russia has
concluded arrangements for obtaining from
the Hersents, of Paris, a loan of 75,000,000
fraucs. The money is to bo expended in
constructing a canal from the eastern ex?
tremity of the Gulf of Perekop, in the Black
Sea, across the neck of land joining th<
Crimea to the mainland to the sea of Az \\.
in order to afford a direct water route from
the river Don to the Black Sea. The uro
posed route would be shorter, more dirc-c!,
and much easier from the mouth ?. I the Don
to either Odessa, the mouth? of ; ? iv.nuhe,
Sebastopoi, or tho Bospborus than ibe pres?
ent one by way of the Strait of Kertch,
which is both roundabout and difficult.
The railways adjacent to ibis =i-w water
route vviil bo put in direct communication
with it.
