[Entered at the Postofxcc ai Alexandria, Virginia, as ttecond vlass matter.} Leiter from Loudonn. I Correspondence of the Alexandria Gazette, j Leesbcso, Va., Feb. 7tb, 1SS7.?Tbc- first fair moruicg for about a week, and a bright and beautiful one it is : we hops it is a fore? runner of the fulfillment of the ground bog? prophecy. We are'having plenty of mud and tu? tend? are very bad; consequently i our towa is doll, as bad roads [seriously af? fect trade here. Muj. J. M. Kilgour lectured Lere test Thursday night on "Good People," to rather a small audience, on account of the weather, but the lecture was full of good things. Tbc lecturer was a little bard ou shams of ail kinds, and we sorry to say provoked some censure, but the "galled jade" will wince. The spring canvas is getting warm and the candidates are working like beavers. The colored brother seems to be an import aut factor in the pending contest aud hold.-* himself at high figures; It is a fact that in and around this town. t;;?:e are no lets thau twenty colored citizens who claim to be leaders, and tue prices they nsk for their vote.-; and influence range from five to cue hundred dollars. The worst of it is. too, tbat these meu demand and in moet instances re? ceive their price ; and this in a democratic county, where, under proper organi? zation, ihs democratic candidates could snap tbeif fingers at such de? mands. So i: goes; enthusiasm :s dead and everything goes by delimit. We (Jo sincerely hope that the people will wake up and see the importance of keeping alive the party by proper organizaiii/t:, and not allow the greed of office to smother every other sentiment. It reaiiy seems that the party, while condemning the President for his course, is rushing iieadiong iuto the same error. Two wrongs wont make one ri^Lt, ami unless the democracy of Virginia act zealously for their rights they will rind the State Jest to tbem. We aro not a croaker, nor do we ever predict defeat, or believe in accepting it until forced upon us; but wo cannot shut our eyes to the fac; that the democrats of our county are lethargic be? cause of blasted hopes and disappointed ex? pectations. They feel that they have been slaughtered in the house of their friends, ami have lost zeal in the cause. We hope they may soon awake and assert their rights and that in another county election, aye, indeed, before our May ejection occurs, they may assert themselves so boldly and so sol? idly that not candidate fighting under the banner of democracy shall be compelled to submit to the bleeding resorted to by tho political vampires of the opposite party. The approach of spring has revived the interest in the new Town Hall, and we have no doubt work wili soon begin ba it. The meeting of the M. E. Church .????c\n Conference here next month, will be an oc? casion of much interest. Arrangements are alre ady pjade for the accommodation of the delegates and their friends, and our people will spare no t ?brt to make the occasion a pleasant one. ThG health of the town is good?better than usual at this season of the year. Many weddings have been talked of .-ince Christ ma.-, but few have occurred. Whether the prevailing bard times acts as a bear up? on the matrimonial market or no! wc are uuabie to say. We are hoping for p.u early and gooir her? ring season. Fish is the p<"><:r man's friend, and a gootl crop al low prices will cause us to forget many troubles, for a full stomach maketb the heart glad. Ja Bee. Mutiny Among Convicts.?a mutiny took place Monday at the convict camp, four miles from Asbeville, N. C. For sev? eral weeks the men have been restive, complaining of the hard work imposed on them, and tho alleged Jack of food. During the week past several hardened criminals were added to the gang, and on Saturday night there were evidences of coming trouble. All day Sunday the men huddled close together, and refused to talk to the guards. When dark came, and the men wcr<- ordered to retire for the night, forty men refused to do so. Several officers en? tered ine stockade and tried-to reason with the men, when they were met with a fusi Iadc of stones, which the convicts had quietly laid in, and stored away in a barrel. The officers retired, closing the gates quick? ly, and put on a double i.L'izb for the night. Yesterday morning when the force was ordered out to work, sixty answered, but tho forty etil! refused. Tho yunrda, who only numbered ten, tired over the) heads of tbejwen, but cries of defiance were the only reply, the men saying they wero not afraid of blank cartridges. Then the guard discharged several volleys directly into the mutinous group, peppering tbem profusely with bird shot. This brought them to their senses, but secured for tbem a place in the hospital, instead of ou the road. They still declare that they will not work. ??The Blood is the Life."
