Several newspapers in New York are per? suading themselves that tho authorities of tho Catholic Church must now take some severe action against Dr. McGlynn, after his recent utterance* at Clarendon Hall, and they quote these paragraphs as particularly offensive: "He who would teach that all men are not equal, ihat the land is not for all, that we aro not one brotherhood, id a sacrilegious thief. Ho would rob man of what (Jod has given him.'' "These men, with their purple, their line linen, their marble palaces, their French cooks and dainty little dinners, preach from their pulpits resignation to the poor. They tell us that poverty is good Cor tho soul. To them the salvation of a soul is accomplished in a hovel with a mud lioor and a few pota? toes. This is all very fine, but let this good gentleman in his tine linen and purple aud marble palace eschew his French cook and partake of the moro savicg meal ofa few potatoes. He might save his soul better than if he lived in a palace and fared sumptuously every day. Consistency is a jewel." "lleligiou shall never be right till we see a democratic pope walking down Broadway with a stove-pipe hat, frock coat and trow sers, and sn umbrella under his arm. Itvmy poor opinion, that man wili be the greatest of ail popes." The words "sacrilegious thief aud "the good gentleman in his due linen and pur? ple," it is said, are indirect attacks on the Archbishop, who must now. out of regard for his own position, "unfrock" or excom? municate the priest. It is hardly prob? able that Archbishop Corrigau will do either. He has suspended Dr. McGlynn, and that is probably all ho will do on his own authority. Aud the reason for the dis? regard with which Dr. MyGlynn's words concerning Archbishop Corrigan will be viewed by the latter, lies probably iu the statement made not long ago by a priest in Baltimore. Said he: "When we were in New York to see Car? dinal Gibbons oti' for Borne, two of us were shown St. .Stephen's Church one morning by an eminent medical gentleman, the brother of one of tho leading clergymen in Baltimore. Naturally, we discussed ia an altogether informal way Dr. McGlyun's un? happy action, and 1 was hardly surprised wheu the doctor *aid to me : 'I have watched Dr. McGlynu'rs course for ?everal years buck as a medical man. Normally, his mind is one of tho brightest I have ever known. But, ps a medical mau, 1 believe that Dr. McGlynn has not, for somo years, been responsible for all he eays and does. And I think there are others who agree with me.' And I, for one,"' concluded the priest, "agree with tho doctor in all be im? plied." Letter from Rappalinimock. (Correspondence of the Alexandria Gazette.) RappaHANNOCK Co., May 2.?Spring is with us in all its glory. The grass is nearly a foot high. The air is sconted with the perfume of apple blossoms, etc. The wheat, which looked very badly a month ago, ha3 come out all right, and from present pros? pects I think the farmer will have nothing to complain of on that ground, in thi3 sec? tion, at least. Ours is a beautiful country, and no wonder that the city people want to lenve the heat and duet orcity life and llee, as birds, to the mountains. Nearly every house in the village was filled last summer with city boarders. The merchants have all gone north for their goods, and will be most smiling to those who have fullest pockets for the next month or two. i Mir friend, Mr. Bird Deatherage, formerly of Warren, but who. for the last three years, has been living in Minnesota, is here on a visit to his relatives, and says that Minne? sota is the place for young men. He-left tho University, by advice of his physician, in February, thinking that the pure mountain air would be beneficial to him, but alas, his days were numbered, and on the j-'Tth of April he fell asleep as quietly as a babe on its mother's breast. His devoted grandmother who ha3 seen the snows of Si years, took him by the hand and tenderly led him to the margin of the great river. He went without fear, I "Only just across the river"?over on the ! other side, where his mother, with out stretched arms, welcomed her darling boy i and led him to bis Saviours feet, whom he : had loved so long.
