TUESDAY EVENING, MAY 17. Popular Ebroks.?Archbishop Corrigan made his canonical visitation to the Church of the Sacred Heart, New York, Sunday morning. Low mass was celebrated, at the conclusion of which the Archbishop spoke on the popular errors, which, he said, wero widely prevalent at the present time. The first of ihe?e was the idea that private own? ership of land was unjust. This idea the Archbishop characterized aa a fallacy against both philosophy and common sense, and as against the teachings of the Catholic Church. Those who claimed that land, like sunshine and air, was the free gift of God, and equally the property of all, overlooked the great difference thai BUD and air canuot become private property bs can land. He declared that every man bad a right to ac? quire, by honest means, as much property as he could, and cited the Indians as au ex? ample of the disastrous results of the free land policy. He also said that the idea was in direct, opposition to a decree of the Pope, and that those who favored it knew that they were infringing on the ordinance of God. The second error which tbe Arch? bishop wished to combat was that the Pope had the right to command and be obeyed only in matters of faith and morais, ami when speaking as infallible, but not in mat? ters of discipline. This idea had been de creed faise by the Vatican Council, who hud ordered that 'if any one should say that the Pope bad u right to command in matters of faith and morals, but not in discipline, let him be anathema." The Pope, however, does not interfere in matters of politics un? less tbe government interferes in matters of conscience, and he has warned all bishops and archbishops that they must be obedient to the government under which they are. ??The Slough ofDespondency" in which you are wallowing, on account of soma of those disease: peculiar to you, mad ame, aud which have robbed you of the rosy hue of health, and made life a burden to you, you can easily get out of. I The Gazette ie now the oldeat paper ie the State, and with few exceptions the old? est in the county, and its usefulness has heen demons!ruled aud appreciated during the eighty seven years of its existence. Ia its columns has always been found a mirror of passing events, aud the careful ohronl cliug of the history of what id going on in the world has ever been its aim. It is always welcomed iu the household, while iu the countiug room aud workshop it has become invaluable. The Gazette had better facilities tor ob? taining news than auy paper outside of the national capital. Situated as it is so close to the great ceutre of news, it enjoys daily the benefit of the Associated Presd dis? patches from every part of the world ; heuce its patrons can read from its columns in the evening what has transpired that day iu every portion of our own domain as well as from every ] art of the habitable globe. Consequently it is an every day occurrence for the Gazette to publish telegrams from the various European capitals twelve aud fifteen houis earlier than the morning pa? pers. Another feature that serves to make the Gazette a great desideratum with mer? chants is its afternoon market reports from New York, Baltimore, Chicago aud other centres. The local department furnishes a full and complete history of everything that occurs in and near the city, and this feature will, a3 ever, receive careful attention. Correspondence from Washington, Klub mond aud every section of the State, is pub? lished regularly, and all events of interest occurring within the bounds of the Com? monwealth are to be found iu the columns of the Gazette. The Gazette's circulation is steadily !" creasing, especially among people who con? sult its advertising columns before purchas? ing. That this is self-evident may be infer? red from the fact that a large country tdi Lion?nearly as large as the daily-is MDt ill over this section of country three UclH l week, end is read by thousands, most of vbom ?eod here or to contiguous cities to cake purchases. The advantages of ad ertiaing in the Gazette are, therefore, sp larent. rates ok subscription. laily Gazette, per annum, . ? ? f??? ri-weekly Gazette, for country, -
