Queen Victoria's Banquet.
Tin.' Queen's dinner party at Buckingham
Palace on last Tuesday was unprecedented
ly magnificent. It consisted entirely of
kings, queens; princes and princesses of the
European royal families who are guests of
Her Majesty. The Queen of Hawaii, Princo
Koma-tti of Japan and all tho Indian princes
were excluded, as they are to be entertain
od separately in a day or two at Windsor.
Tito plate, which had been sent from Wind?
sor, was glorious, and at dessert the Queen
used for tho iirst time the service presented
to her by the King of Saxony. It is cf "pate
jauue" with llowers in the middie, and is
valued nr t!S,000. Gold and silver vases
filled with exotics, and forty-two enormous
candelabra, containing over seven hundred
candies, illuminated t he table. Tim Queen
sat in the centre, and was dressed in oiack
satin, covered with -Maltese lace. .She wore
her usual widow'.-cap, with many diamonds
on it, and star and ribbon of the Garter,
witii all her other orders. Her hands were
literally laden with priceless rings. She hud
the King of the Belgians on her right and
the King of Denmark on her left, and with
them chatted throughout the banquet. The
Queen of the Belgians sat next, to the King
of Denmark, having on her right tho King
of Greece. Then camo tho Crown Princess
of Germany, who is certainly the plainest
of tho English royal family and who wore a
marvelous necklace of pearls, someof which
were the size of a pigeon's egg. The Princess
of Wales wore the jewels presented to her
l>y the oily of London at her marriage. The
rubies and diamonds worn by the Duchess
of Edinburgh are valued at'a quarter of a
million sterling. The Crown Princess of
Portugal had on superb emeralds. Behind
each guest was a servant in scarlet livery
with pov.-dered hair, golden epaulets and a
court, sword, whilst mauy gent!emcn-in
waiting in fall court attire were grouped
around the table. The baud of thoCorpsof
Royal Engineers performed a selection of
music during the dinner. When they play?
ed the "Blue Danube" waltz the Queen sent
r. messenger to the Crown Prince of Austria
and smiled graciously to him, evidently
wishing him to understand that she had se?
lected this air in honor of Austria,
Queen Kapiolani.?Although most of
thoso who saw Queeu Kapiolaui in Queen
Victoria's jubilee procession have a very
misty idea as to where her Ma jesty's domin?
ions are located, it was generally under?
stood that the occasion of her presence in
London was t be negotiation of a much-needed
loan, but the complications which follow
the inevitable insurrection in Hawaii threat?
en to be far reaching in their results. Tho
royalty orKing Kalakaua has been a merry
one, but may soon place him in the catego?
ry of monarchy out of business, A good
lump sum?enough to enable him to pass
tho remainder of his days in tho gay capi?
tals of Europe?would probably induco him
lo submit the isiauds to the authority of a
protectorate and join his spot.se in London.
His realms have seriously deteriorated,
morally and in their physical aspect as
well as financially, aud life and property
hii. o be* u for some lime unsafe there. The
German merchants who have so large a
stake there in their appeal to the Imperial
j Government, through its consul at Honolu?
lu, recapitulate their grievances and fears,
probably in tho hope that the remedy will
suggest itself und virtually call on their
government lor relief. Germany's ambition
to estaijli.-ii colonies will induce her to strive
earnestly to secure the protectorate over
tho fertiie Hawaiian group, and it is certain
that her claim will be among those most
vigorously net ted.
