Law Ion's company of the 1th cavalry has arrived from Arizona ut Fort Myer, in this county, where they will bo permanently stationed, Mil l with (.'apt. Anderson's, company of the ti:h cavalry complete the cavalry garrison; at that fort. Some of the soldiers of Capt. Anderson's company, who have been at Furl Myer for tho past week, aro thorough border men, and aro now experiencing for the first time the advantages and pleasures of Ka-tern civilization. Some of them were cowboys when they enlisted. They don't know much about Kastern ways, but are gt-nerally pretty smart, and w hen told to do a thing manage to perform their duty some way. A good story is told of one of them. The other day an otlicer ordered him to ride to Washington and mail a letter in the let? ter box w hich he w ould lind on a lamp post. He put spurs to his horse and did not draw rein until he spied a lamp-post. Rising in his stirrups he opened the glass door of the lamp and dropped the letter iu alongside the burner. He was about to ride away when some one, who had been watching him, explained his mistake and directed him , to a letter-box. Tue W. ? o. Extension.?A letter quo? ted in the Clarke Cbnrier, from an official of the Richmond Danville Railroad to Mr. Soyder, of Clarke, says that plans are now being matured for an extension of the W. A: O. road from its present terminus to the top of the mountain. The object, we srup ;. pse, is to make the gap an excursion-point for the Washington and Alexandria people. Such a work would probably be of a tem? porary character, though, by startinc some distance ea-t of Snickersville. a grade could be obtained tu the summit without a tunnel quite practicable for freight trains with aux? iliary power. Similar grades could be ob tuined on the western slope. If the idea is j to run excursion trains this summer, there is no tiuie to lose in getting to work. Once half way across the mountain, the impor taoce of pressiug west ward w ould become more anil more apparent. Even with a sur? face liue aud high grades, we believe it would pay. Of course it would be better to make the fifteen hundred feet tunnel as soon as possible, and haven first class road of this long mooted improvement.-- Winches? ter Tiines.
